Who could do it?...

In all honesty, I could and would...but for one thing--the timing. Unlike some, I would not necessarily choose to do it if I could go back to when I was younger, but it is something I would try upon retirement in a handful of years. I would LOVE to do it!

Then when they got to California - their marriage dissolved in a short amount of time.

That's it!

The final outcome seems to support my "challenging walking with another person" theory.

No.

No desire to do it and no desire to leave my son.

Besides, how would I get on the interwebs to check what's going on in W&SS and get more blades? :D

If my physique would allow it yes, I have alot of back, feet and other health problems. If I didn't have those,

........ I would certainly do it:thumbup:

No matter what I think that is a seriously cool video.

And yes, my boys are grown and my wife has already been put on notice that the first year I'm retired I am doing the AT. The year after possibly the PCT.

When I graduated HS ('75) I had a plan to ride a bike with a friend from CT to FL on the old route 1. My dad was convinced we were insane and we had actually never heard of anyone trying such a stunt and he refused to allow me to do it. I have never forgotten that. Probably one of my few regrets of my youth. So my next challenge is the AT when I retire.

I give this kid a lot of credit because I am sure there were plenty of people telling him what a waste of time and how foolish it was. He still did it.

i could do it, and i would do it BUT...i have a 7mo son and no money....my ol lady would love to have me gone for a year! :) she might even throw me an extra year!

it would be interesting to try it with limited funds...

Could I do it? Sure, no problem. Would I want to? If someone is paying the way I'm all for it. I'd rather do it on a bicycle though, I could cover more ground and see more things.

That reminds me of an article I read years ago. It was on post hike comments from trail logs. One hiker named Jane's comments; it was hot or it was raining the whole trip, too many bugs, pack was uncomfortable, ground was hard! Next hikers comments; Great trip....... except for Jane. LOL
Now back to your regularly scheduled program!

It makes me wonder, and I am wondering aloud here - nothing more, if the vast majority of those that post on bulletin boards are just those that want to be...

For instance, I post regularly on a paintball board and I posted a "When was the last time you played" and the vast majority of the members only play about once a year.

This means that most posters simply talk about paintball - and don't play.

I wonder what this means about the choices we make in life. Something we love (like being in the wild and surviving) we have made choices in our lives that do not allow us to do it. We make choices to hamstring ourselves.

Again - just wondering aloud and not accusing - please - no one take it personally.

I think this is very true of a lot of people. "Making a living" gets in the way of "making a life". My job requires a lot of my time, keeping me from doing many of the things I enjoy as often as I would like. This came from choices I have made. Trying to have the best pay possible to support my family and prepare for retirement has put me here.

The question becomes Kat - do you work less now - and a little longer - or work more now and retire early?

Most people get into debt so bad and live a life style that they cannot afford for so long that they NEVER retire!

TF

More choices! What you need and what you want are seldom the same. As Dave Ramsey says, "Live like no one else now so that later you can live like no one else".
I am on the work more now and retire early plan. My wife and I have a lot of trips that we want to take that can only happen in retirement because of the time factor. That said, we do still take short trips several times a year. I would hate to put all my hopes on all this traveling in retirement to get sick the week before my retirement date and never leave the house. A little now with an eye on the future.

Good point. 22 years and I'm DONE. I have a plan and I'm sticking to it. The plan is a Hunter ~40' sailboat and an international bank account.

TF, you allude to something that I don't think a lot of folks (not necessarily here, but in the "real" world) realize:

Often, wanting to have or wanting to do is a whole lot better than actually having or doing.

How many people yearn to take a vacation only to feel like they need a vacation when they get back??? Suddenly, a vacation isn't all that it is cracked up to be.

Walking that distance might sound romantic, cool, and adventurous. It might be a way of proving to ourselves that we are still young, strong, capable, and are not your average couch potato. Yet, when the rubber hits the road, how many would really do it, through rain, snow, heat, freezing temps, times when you're sick, tired, hurt, hungry, etc.? Though you didn't mention them in your first post, they are certainly things one needs to consider before answering your question.

Physically not a problem, however as many here have already mentioned 'life' has fairly shackled me down. A great woman, a dog, a career and a mortgage are just too much to ignore for a year.

Now if I won the lottery and didn't have to worry about a career or bills then that would be a different story.

Good to see people still doing this type of thing though.

I would love to do this! It has always been a dream of mine to walk across the country.

I would be willing to leave my job, if I knew there was a good job waiting for me when I finished. The only problem is that we are looking to buy a house right now, and hoping to start a family by next year, and I couldn't put off my wife's desires and life goals just to fulfill one of my own.

Maybe when I retire if I can keep myself in good enough shape. Or if I suddenly came into some money, so I didn't have to work and could still make house payments...

I think we have hit what is near and dear to my heart now...

Can I do the things I really want to do - or do I do what I do because I have always done what I have done...?

I talked with my wife about this yesterday. If I could find a way to take care of my financial responsibilities and she could come visit, then I'd totally do this. But if I had to dump my responsibilities on her and had to take a year (or however long) exodus from my beloved, there wouldn't be a snowballs chance in Hell. I could train someone to do my job in 2 months and this would be a great chance to be able to move as well. I love Louisiana, but the North coasts sure look tempting.
