Who could make it for a multi day canoe trip in the Albertan outback?

Hey guys,

Well, I got to thinking last night, and after talking with some of you I would like to propose a fairly large trip.

I would like to take a multi day trip, no more than 4-5 days down the Wapiti river, here in north western alberta. Right now, I'm just throwing this out there to see if there is even anyone who would be interested. It would require flying up of course, and I think it would be a longish trip, I can guarantee it would be worth it.

The river its self has alot of history behind it, and actually is one of the leading areas in alberta to find Prehistoric fossils.

Here are some shots of the river from two parks in the local area, O'Brian Park, and Pipestone creek.

Here is a fossil that was found here not too long ago.

So, to the details. This would be taking place this summer, mabye towards the end on july?
I would like to know that 10 or more people were coming, but mabye we could set something up if only a small amount of people could come. I the event that more than ten would be interested, I will contact a friend at a local sporting shop for pricing on canoe rentals, and get to the nitty grttiy on the information on the river.

Here is some more Info on the river.

But let me know what you guys think, this is going to be quite the trip, and I would like to know that there are some other's who knew their way with a canoe.

Judging by the flat shallow river profile and the gravel you may be better off in a rubber raft with pulls for the trip.... ;)

Its not as bad as it looks, it has quite a deep center and has quite a drop to it.

G'day Fonly

I would dearly love to, but unfortunately it's a bit too far :(

As Canada is on my must see list before my time comes, I would love to see pics of your trip.

Kind regards
Mick

I would love to as well. I've spent the past 3 summers canoeing down the Delaware. Unfortunately, summer is our busiest time, so I won't be able to get away. :-( Good luck, sounds like a great time!

Yeah, Im still in the process of set-up, but Ill keep checking in on who is available, when I get enough people Ill put up a list of time and dates.

I missed this somehow! I'm very interested, but July and August are very busy times for me. BUT, I might be able to squeeze it in.

How many nights are you thinking?

From the pictures, the river looks pretty mellow, what are the rapids like? Class 3+?

How many miles a day would we be aiming at?

Is most of the section of river that we would be on private? Meaning away from homes and cities and parks?

Would it be best to fly directly into Alberta? What airport?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm interested!

Oh, class three at the max, more like a class 2.

We are planty away from homes, nothing around for miles, perfect! After a mile or two, there is a main highway, but its not very busy, other than that its some beautiful area with little to no traffic.

Yes, coming to Grande Prairie, Alberta would be the place, I will arrange for transportation, I'll be there to meet anyone who can come. I would suspect who ever came would like to rest a bit, so we could leave the following morning, I was thinking a 3 day trip, take our time and just relax for a bit.

The more the merrier for sure.

oh man that could be one heck of an awsome trip.. When are you planning on it.. The chance for me to make it is about 5% but i would still going to check how much a flight might cost. Oh i never been on a trip in a canoe Can just see my self in the water more then out lol...
