Hey guys, I am looking for a bowie knife and none of the production knives are really doing it for me. It looks like I will have to find a custom maker. These are my requirements:
around $200.00
Differentially heat treated carbon steel
58-60 rockwell edge
10 to 12 inch blade
full tang
wood handle
Overall I want a real simple, basic, no frills but high quality user knife. Something for camping and such. Blade shape, guard and handle are factors but flexible. I would like something along the lines of a Cold Steel Trailmaster or Western 49 Bowie designs. Can you point me in a direction?

Check out MaxTheKnife of OGG custom knives. I dont have the first clue what his current prices are, but he is reasonable. He will work with you and do about anything you want within reason. Here is the bowie he made for me.

For a custom, the $200 is kinda limiting.

Try Newt Livesay. Or Greco if you don't mind an unrefined block of 1/4" steel.

Some people like knives made out of files, others don't.

Try the Jones Brothers. You can email them at: jknives @gamewood.net
I bet with the right materials they could come close to your price and their work is top notch.

You may want to contact our forums own Bill Siegle at was4u.com.

He' s always offering several fix blades at a time periodically. But at $200, you may be a bit limited. Bill uses differentially heat treated 5160. Many of them are paracord wrapped. Just right at about $200. Good luck.

Or go see member RDTs post in the 4 sale forum. He has a Siegle wood coffin shaped handle one available.

The Ontario Knife company have three Bowies with blades over 10 inches. All are available for $215.00 or less at:

Thanks for the leads guys. It looks like I may have to up my ante some. I will just have to save up some more.

Go with Max Burnett. Super nice gentleman and makes a very fine blade!

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!
