Ok to first start off with I do own many Ka-bars and every guy and his mother has one when your a Marine. I'm looking for a knife that is 6 to 8 inches long in the blade it has to be a good fighting and utility knife. I'm open to anything thanks.

I have a few that come to mind :)
1. MercWorx
2. Entrek
3.TOPS Knives
4.Extrema Ratio
5.swamprat
6.busse
7.strider
8.Chris Reeve
Sure theres lots more just listed the ones that poped into mind

Agree with Kennieyk, SwampRat and Busse are excellent! I'd say Becker Knife & Tool from Camillus as well. Great knives for very little money!
I have never seen one "live" but if you wanna go custom, Jones Brothers offers in this kategory looks great too!

Yes, there are a lot of good choices,
but don't forget about Fallkniven,
and ranger knifes,
and FEHRMAN!!!!! (awesome)
Also, well, the list goes on and on,
but a Branton/Brend would be nice too!!!
Good Luck,
but you'd be better narrowing your choices a little,
and then asking us to pick between 2 or 3,
and then do you your homework,
some of us are pretty biased,
but definately HANDLE BEFORE YOU BUY.
A combat knife is nothing to take a chance on,
and ergonics might be critical to you
(although, strider disagrees on this, but you'll have to read their website for more info)
Also, Newt Livesay and Allen Blade, or maybe not.
or maybe even Lynn Griffith, or maybe not.

What it really comes down to also,
is how much money are you willing to spend,
What about a Randall?
I personally would consider a Larry Harley Battle bowie!!!

How about Emerson. That would be one of the top ones to consider I'd think.

Then again Cold Steel sells some pretty stout very capable combat and survival knives as does SOG. My son is using a Cold Steel Recon Scout in Iraq and says it is great. Mainly due to the facty that it is easy to grip and hold on to with sweaty hands in that extreme heat over there and that the blade can bash in walls or crack skulls if need be and still work as a cutting tool.

Also, Bob Doziers top end tacticals are perhaps as tough as any out there. It is a tough choice. Mainy though in a combat or survival knife the sheath is as important as the knife itself. I'd look closely at the sheaths for each one before making a final decision.

My first choice for my son was the SOG Navy Seal knife but the sheath broke on two occassions before he was even deployed. Each time on each of the two knives I bought for him from SOG it was the weak snaps on the sheath that are responsible for holding the knife in the sheath securely, that broke. What good is a great knife if the sheath is so weak it can't even be trusted?

Combat is sort of a vague word, especially the way non-military folks use it. It can mean anything from mainly a woods type knife to a 'fighter'. How do you define 'combat'?

Check out the Cold Fury by Fehrman Knives if you want a tough as nails, straight up combat knife!!!!!

The (new-style) Cold Steel 6" Tanto is a pretty stout knife that makes for a good "short" fighter. The Camillus/Becker BK-7 is also worth a look. For a pure "fighter", the Cold Steel Tai Pan is an excellent choice.

I think Busse makes the best "combat knives", by wich I mean a compromise between a fighter and a camp knife.

a sharp well pointed double edged knife definitely...hard to find good one for a reasonable price...too bad some are no longer produced...Tai Pan is a good choice, though it's somewhat too wide for my taste

if you don't like double edged knife...take a look at gryphon designed by Bob Terzuola...anyway a good fighting knife should be pointy, with a sharp relatively thin edge and blade not too wide

The BM Nimravus is a solid no-nonsense combat utility knife. Not the "best" perhaps, but very, very good at an affordable price.

What makes a good combat knife? Are you really going to need to chop things? Or is it more important that the knife is comfortable, lightweight, and strong?

The BM Nimravus conceals very easily on the belt under a BDU top, and, surprisingly, when in an inverted carry is just as comfortable and accessable when wearing LBE and a ruck. If you do have to use a knife for combat, accessability and surprise are, perhaps, the two key factors.

If you want a sharpened prybar to open doors and crates, the Camillus TacTool might be a good choice. The Razel might work too - does anyone know how tough these are?

I'm a Marine machine gunner 0331 going back to Iraq for my third time. The knives I love are my Ka-bar that I have but I want to get something that no one else has. I also got to feel the Delta raider and feel in love with it. This knife has to be tough blade will not have to chip or bend easily. It must be able to use to pry and cut everytime I pull it out. Price I'm looking to spend not more them $400 tops.

Busse Steel Heart Fusion will fit the bill, as would a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp at about 1/3 the price. I think the Tramp might be better, as the handle won't get hot in the sun, and you won't care so much if you lose it. The corrosion advantage of INFI would probably not be a big deal in the desert.

For that matter, you would probably do really well with a Howling Rat from SRKW, or something like a Natural Outlaw from Busse, but you would have to find one used. Cliff Stamp's heavy brother (in law?) hung his full weight on the Howling Rat with no problem, and it sure would be easier to carry than the Camp Tramp.
