Who do think makes the best combat knives?

If your a strong, tough guy, then ergonimcs and weight aren't really issues, so in a combat knife you want it to be indestructable, and not much else. I think Ka-Bars (mines a D2 Extreme) are the best. However, there are sharper knifes out there, but a D2 Extreme will cut another human being's flesh as good as you'll ever need to.

I'm a Marine machine gunner 0331 going back to Iraq for my third time. The knives I love are my Ka-bar that I have but I want to get something that no one else has. I also got to feel the Delta raider and feel in love with it. This knife has to be tough blade will not have to chip or bend easily. It must be able to use to pry and cut everytime I pull it out. Price I'm looking to spend not more them $400 tops.

Then check out Busse. His knives are designed with these task in mind. Chopping/prying, opening MRE's and ammo crates, 99% of what you are going to use a knife for. They will also serve as fighters, but as a MG things will have really gone South for that role.

A good chunk of Busse's output goes to the military, and the knives are just that tough. Swamp Rat is a sister company selling at 1/2 or less of a Busse. You can't go wrong with either one. Both offer the same unconditional warranty against damage. The warranty follows the knife, not the owner, so buying used or thirdhand for that matter does not affect the warranty, it's still covered.

Visit Busse and Swamp Rat sub forums in the Manufacturer's area of BF and ask around. There are active duty people there to ask questions of.

I'm with Wetdog,
The Busse Satin Jack is another one to take a look at. It is beefy enough to handle all the nasty crap you can throw at it, (Jerry Busse, cut a accident victim out of his car with no functionality lost at all) plus it is a good slicer. Plus the warranty means that you can never be to rough with it.

Everybody seems to have something against Kabars. I like them; (true hard use IMO) and the Fehrmans look pretty good, as do Mad Dog, esp. the ATAK & ATAKII. I've heard good things about Busse.

Definitely take a look at a Mad Dog. Pricy, but I have heard many good things. From what I have heard, Kevin McClung will give military orders priority.

Somebody mentioned a Nimravus? I have one and it's a great less-expensive fixed blade. I use it for untiity, and it hasn't ever let me down.

The best fighting knife is very easy to answer, hands down dont argue, without a doubt: Sig 229.
I really love my Entrek survivor though.

When I'm in your situation (Army, yet to be deployed to Iraq), I'll be going with Strider or my Ranger RAK, which is being shipped as we speak:
http://www.rangerknives.com

Both of them have 550 cord handles, a feature I think is worthy of mentioning due to it's emergency/survival use.

Warthog

Since you feel that the Cold Steel Tai Pan is too wide, how about a Camillus CUDA CQB-1?

For me, Mad Dog fighters reign supreme for combat. For a lot of other competing knife brands, I have to think about it as I grip the knife, to try and ensure I have all of it and that my hand is positioned just so; to ensure that the meat of the hand is not folded improperly which can blister under white knuckle grip. It's like my hand needs to accomodate the grip shape, rather than fall around it comfortably in first attempt. This activity takes away crucial time and concentration.

When you go for a Mad Dog in the scabbard, even in the dark, you index surely, quickly and comfortably, with no discernable hot spots immediately or with extended use. Withdrawn, you have great control. The MD grips all have similar appearance, but each have slight but significant modification for each blade models intended purpose to which they are attached; the grips are hand ground in consideration to the length and weight of the blade. Great knives with some of the best user interface.

That a D2 Extreme??

both strider and busse make prybar tough knives and would be my first choice for a combat/fighting knife. between the two strider's paracord wrap handle offers a good grip but isn't very comfortable and i would think sand would get in between it.

busse blades tend to be less fighter oriented and more utilitarian with wide heavy blades that can take considerable abuse. the satin jack and new force one however are much more of a fighter style esp. the force one with its penetrator tip and sharpened "band breaker" back edge. this would be my pick for a combat knife in the desert
