Kevin,
Walt, with his quote from Emerson, has things dead to rights. And ironically Walt is pretty darned good about acquiring his target right out of the starting gate.
The term we use around here is "SME" or subject matter expert, which denotes an individual who has consistently demonstrated mastery of a particular subject which is usually quite finite in scope. We don't have many SMEs around my neck of the woods but I dare say we've quite a collection here on the forums. If you reduced the scope of your query from knives in general to specific subtopics or considered expanding your scope limitlessly, you'll find we have folks with the education and practical experience to touch upon darned near anything. What we tend to loose sight of is that the participants here all have other "lives" and interests...Doc Welch's emergency medical experience is an obvious one, Mike Turber's astronomy hobby, Rob Simonich's native american cultural knowledge, Dona D'Cicci like you on Web Site management among other things..... the list goes on and on. This gestalt mix of talents and backgrounds is one of the great features of a forum like this. And with respect to this forum in particular, it has been noted by many that those of us with cutlery interests seem to be a rather decent lot too
