Who does heat treating?

Hi,

I'm trying to make a friction folder out of 1095. I tried to heat treat it with a torch, but I don't really know what I'm doing, and I think I screwed it up.

Are there people out there that will heat treat small quantities (1-3 small blades) that need to be quenched? The few that I could find with google only did air hardening steels.

More specifically, I would like it to follow roughly this procedure:

"Heat at austenizing temperature for 1 minute for 1095. I watch for the shadow in the unaustenized portion. caused by the arrest point. (I need an oven). Quench in 120øF quenching oil. Cool to -5øF for 1/2 hour. Temper at 212øF (boiling water) for 15 - 30 minutes. Cool to -5øF for 1/2 hour. Draw at 325øF for 1 hour."

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Del or Peters' Heat Treat in PA will hook you up. Brad Stallsmith at Peters' will be glad to walk you through the process.

If you send it to me with return postage I will harden it for you the next time I do some 1095. If I am hardening 1095 I will also be tempering and an extra is not much work to put in with the other or others. You would be on my time table though. Couple questions too. Any idea how hot you got it and or did you forge it. If you think you may have got it over 1500f it should to be normilized before hardening. Thats not hard to do. It just should happen if you got it to hot. Let me know with a PM.

Are there any other suggestions?

I haven't been able to get a hold of either of these people.

Thanks

Jim if you will call me on the phone I maybe able to do that for you. We can talk about that when you call. It's up to you.

Sorry to hear this guys, I've recommended him several times over the past year or two and everyone has had good luck. I hope everything is well with him, I haven't seen him post recently.

He's probably cranking out a batch of damascus for Leatherman again. :D

I just sent some 1095 to Lee Oates in La Porte, TX Bear Claw Knives He came highly recommended. I haven't got a forge together yet.
