Who eats shrimp tails?

I used to occassionally eat the tails . . and i used to enjoy the tempura battered shrimp heads that the sushi chef would occassionally send our way when he was having fun . .

but then I read a thread on Fark about sushi and some guy posted about how he had once eaten some of those heads and gotten really bad food poisoning. And he just got sicker and sicker until he went to the emergency room and they had to do emergency surgery and pump him full of antibiotics - because the shrimp shell had pierced his lower intestine and he wound up getting an insanely bad infection. Ugh - no thanks!

Hi All-

Those are my identical preferred preparation methods! I don't want heads, shells, tails, and dirt getting in the way of my eating.
"...I don't eat those battered and deep fried excuses for shrimp. That's an awful thing to do to a perfectly good shrimp. Shrimp should be completely peeled and deveined and either steamed, boiled, sauteed, grilled, or baked. The only condiments necessary are garlic butter or cocktail sauce with so much horseradish it can double as smelling salts..."

I'm going to Calabash NC on vacation October 7 - 14. I go down to the docks where the shrimp boats come in and buy shrimp for around $2 - $2.50 a pound right off the boats. There's usually some old timer with one eye and 7 or 8 fingers hanging around the dock who will pull the heads off the shrimp for around 25 cents a pound. Shrimp is cheaper than hamburger and I'll eat some at every meal while I'm there.
