I've lived by this credo since I first heard it as a young'n, but can't remember who coined this. A little assist would be appreciated.

It sounds like something that an old school big wall climber would say.

I couldn't find any exact matches, but Margaret Thatcher apparently said something related. There are references to a similar saying in Chinese proverbs as well, basically saying that you will not improve yourself unless you are a little bit tired, a little bit cold, and a little bit hungry.
 
well i'm just in from work, so i;'m tired, i'm down to my shorts and T, so i'm cold, and i havent eaten yet so i'm hungry.

lesson learned today - go for the cold beer......
