Who Gives The Best "Value" for your Knife $ (fixed and folder)

Paul,
Thanks for the praise! As a part time maker, I am able to give myself plenty of time to devote to each knife.
Selling knives to fellow Forum members is a challenge to me. I know that when they are received a review may soon follow!!! To me this is like having 8,000 eyes looking at my work. There is NO WAY a knife will leave my shop until I'm happy with it's quality!

For custom fixed blades, I have two.

1. Bob Dozier. That's a LOTTA knife for the money.

2. GenO Denning. He's a full-time maker from SC. He's been a student of George Herron (just like Wayne Hendrix). His hunters have gorgeous hollow grinds, ATS-34, tapered tangs, tapered butts, beautiful satin or mirror finishes, red spacers, very nice leather sheaths. Both the knife and the sheath have matching serial numbers. Outstanding fit and finish. In Micarta or Corian handles, the knife sells for $85-$100.

Here's a scan of my pair:

Actually, I pickep up BOTH of those knives at a show for $160. Can't touch that! He's also a super person. He had me down to spend a weekend recently working in his shop and working a gun/knife show. Had a great time.

In folders, Kit Carson's knives are hard to beat. When you consider the materials, design, and the fit and finish, nobody else comes close IMO.

The MSRP on Spyderco liner locks is just as high as Benchmade. Their lightweights are up there, too. Luckily, they can be readily found at WAY below MSRP. Ordered a Native yesterday (Friday) from Top of Texas for $40, and a Benchmade 710 for $97. Gonna have to go with CRKT or Spyderco for folders.

Ontario has, by far, the best value for fixed blades. If it wasn't for that damn guard, the Marine Raider would be GREAT! But it DOES have the guard, which is why I returned for their large tanto (15.25 inches, definitely over 1 shaku, but who cares? I don't worry about labels unless it's a legal thing, and even then, most of us usually bend the law a little). Of course, at the time, tantos were all the rage, and I got suckered into thinking they were super blades, also due to my martial arts training (a la Kendo). I have been very satisfied with it, and grown quite fond of it. Only cost me in the upper 30's at Discount Knives 2 years ago. Also got the Cold Wind "Katana" (again, not a katana by definition), from the same dealer, same company, for about $120. I love that sword, and it's better than any sword I can think of for the same price, unless of course you LIKE 1/4 tang swords. My XL Voyager was $57, same dealer, but Cold Steel.

Side note: the prices of the 5 items I mentioned purchasing add up to appx. $360, and that's not even my whole "collection". That would seem absolutely insane to most people, but to us, that's nothing. How much do you people pay for you customs? A lot more than that... and you barely think twice about it. I don't care if "they" outnumber "us" a gazillion-to-one; they're WRONG!!! :-)

Cold Steel 2nds are ridiculously cheap, and one of my goals in life is to own one of everything they make in 2nds (my goals of world domination, having AC/DC play at my house, and owning a Chris Reeve Project I are still on my list)

Sorry, but I have to say that you guys are forgetting the obvious. For $36, the good old Ka-Bar can't be beat!

Folders: Benchmade and CRK

Fixed: CRK

Good care and customer service counts big in my book. CRK expecially takes care of this.

For my money it will be the CRKT knives (folders). Next is Spyderco and Benchmade. Although I must say I like the latter.

The best value I'got is the puukkos I bought from Ragnar's webpage.

A lot of knife for the money! All are below $20 and they are very sharp and seems to hard their edge forever. All are carbon steel.

The other one is $25 with a 6" long blade and serve well in my hiking trips.

Hi Harlow J!

I think this is a difficult question.
Here on the forums we are knife-freaks (no offence
smile.gif
). To me that means we want more!
I'll give you an example: If I need (I don't realy need to) to slice my daily apple a SAK gives me the best price/performance-ratio.
If you want more it depends.
I can't make me cut an apple with a custom folder. OTOH if I could only have one folding knife it would be a custom (Bob T's ATCF).
For fixed blades my choice is a fallkniven or a kukrie.
Greetings

I can see by this post that I am going to have to get a Sebenza. Fixed blades from Neil Blackwood. CS folders give alot of bang for the money. The posts on this topic look like my wish list of knives.

For fixed blade knives, the line that Mike Irie has, his Sports knives have to be right up there, but it depends on what you want the knife for, these are stag handled with sheath that can be gotten most places for around $100 or so, a pretty nice deal and he does a very good grind on these, about 10 different style blades to boot!

Folders, boy what a can of worms that opens,
Spyderco, Benchmade, both are very good value
Next step up, William Henry, Chris Reeve Sebenzas have the nod.
