Who Has a Wife Who Likes to Shoot?

Not wife but girlfriend.

That looks like Reeds.

I don't like that place.

I wanted to do a little shooting with a .44 Mag. All I've got for pistols are a 9 mm and a .475 Linebaugh. They won't let me use the Linebaugh because the muzzle energy is too high and I didn't bring the 9 mm because I wanted something with more kick. When I got there I asked to rent a black hawk and they wouldn't do it because I was alone and I didn't bring a gun with me.

Years ago, before Reed's took over and it was National Shooting Club, I used to do the same thing all the time, no problem. Reed's management sucks. And it's not exactly cheap either.

I prefer the Los Altos Rod and Gun Club.

That place is pretty cool.

National Shooting Club is definitely more laxed than Reed's. That is why my buddies and I used to call it National Suicide Club :D

I didn't know about not being able to shoot .475 Linebaugh there. We use to shoot 454 and 50AE there all the time. But I guess 475 is quite a bit more stout than either of those. Just make sure I am not in the same room when you touch one of those off :D

.475 with factory loads is milder than a slightly warm .454 load.

I doubt Reed's would let you shoot a .454 today.

Their excuse is the backstop but unless they had problems with .454's in the past, it should be fine.

They just suck.

Hey Hogwash, you Cali guys should move to a free state like most of the fortune 500 companies which have chosen to move to TX. :D No one really care what we shoot down here... so long as it is aimed where it is supposed to hit.

As it turns out, companies (like people) prefer freedom from government intervention. Go figure.... ;) Crap... I did it now... they are gonna move this to political :p

Seriously... the first beer is on ME!!! Come on down!:D

Heck, if I was single I might consider moving. But I just love the weather, food, and diversity here. The gun laws here suck but the knife laws are very reasonable.

Nice P90 David. How do you like it?

I got the wife a Springfield XD9 subcompact for Christmas. It came highly recommended from a buddy's wife who shoots competivly. I then spent the money to properly equip her and sent her to a firearms academy about an hour north of here. Money well spent. The wife has been having a great time and is shooting very well. Prior to her first class she had never fired a gun.

My wife and I shoot and hunt together a lot. She started shooting as a kid with her Dad but really got into it when we started dating. Debbie started with a S&W 640 .38 which was tough to shoot because of the DA pull and short sight radius but she did well with it. After that she moved up to a Sig P239 9mm for a few years as she wanted to o to an auto.

She then moved to her current (and probably last) carry gun; her custom Wilson Combat SDS 1911a1 in .45ACP. She shoots it very well and carries it every day with a spare mag, defense knife, pepper spray, and a surefire exec. The 1911a1 fits smaller hands with the slim line grips, is quite safe to carry, comes in all reasonable carry calibers, and it a lot easier to shoot well because of the consistent crisp trigger pull.

Let you wife try a variety of firearms and she what she feels comfortable with. Often wives who start shooting just get told "here you need a .32 so take this and go forth" without any regard for what will work well for them. If they want to start with a wheel gun, a Kahr, Glock, or even a 1911 give them encouragement and get them some training (better yet go with them).

We are currently working our way through the classes at TDSA for pistol, rifle, shotgun, and sub-gun. It strongly recomend advanced training with firearms even if it just a few basic classes to build confidence and proficiency.

As for hunting, here she is with her Blaser R93 in 375 H&H and her 2007 Lioness which was just one of 12 heads of game she took on our Safari.

My wife carries a Springfield Armory XD-9 Sub Compact and loves it! She went with me to one of the localk gun shows and touched ever handgun they had! She originally started with a Kahr PM-40, but after shooting it, opted for something elst (an expensive option to go with!!)

Since she took her original handgun safety class, she has since returned for Home Defense classes, tactical handgun class, defensive shotgun class, and has competed in several tactical handgun matches (Polite Society Competitions)

I would STRONGLY encourage you to go to your local gun range that rents handguns, and let her make her own decision. This will give her a sense of ownership she doesn't have when using your handgun, AND, IMO, is a very worthwhile envestment!

Good Luck!

so when she tells you to buy something like a scabbard you had better do it!

I would disagree with this.... Strongly disagree.

As husbands, we naturally want to help our spouses. While at the Firearms Academy, I have noticed many Husbands who would "encourage" or "help" or "assist" with the wifes shooting. They usually end up doing OK, but there is some frustration there.

I would recommend paying for the class, send her off ALONE, then when she gets back, take her to the range and let her show off a little. This takes our husbandly "male egos" out of what should be Her class. My wife agrees with this, but says that all wives are different. Give her that option.

I've shot fine with my wife in the past, but your point is well taken, and I'd already thought of it.

I'm taking the class again as a refresher, but when it comes time to shoot, I'm going to the other end of the range. We have a group of 5 going, so there'll be at least 3 lanes between me and her. She's on her own, and she knows it. I know she doesn't want me hovering over her every move.

I have to agree with Mike. I read an article (IIRC) by Clint Smith that pretty much boiled down to what Mike said. Addidtionally As someone who fixes things for a living it is hard for me to stand back and not get involved. Which is why I have paid good money to send her to professionals for instruction.

Actually I think it depends on the class and the spouse. Debbie my beloved and (coincidentally) my wife does not take well to "inter family instruction". Which was tough on me for a while. While I still take classes and approach all instruction as a open minded student years ago I thought at SOTIC in the Army so I figured I could help "foster her along". It was like trying to teach cats to walk backward! So while we attend classes together, we do not compete or coach. This allows us to shoot together and enjoy it but keeps the tension down.

What I meant by "go with her" was more of a "get some training yourself statement" because as males we (at times) assume that ownership + opinion = skill.

I have found 99% of instructors will not allow spouses to work as partners in a class as it normally devolves.

Thanks KH for the kind reference and for feeding my new INFI needs!
