Who has had a Kershaw Speed Safe mech. fail?

orthogonal1, thought you and others would like to know, that we here at Kershaw have a less than 1% of our knives coming back for warranty work. There is no material problem, and it is not a distraction. Hopefully our reputation speaks for itself, our customer service as well.

I just wanted to mention that my post above was not any kind of dig on Kershaw or SpeedSafe, it was just an informational post. When I've had a spring break it has never taken more than 3 business days for Kershaw to get new ones to me. I think they have great customer service and a fine product.

Hi Thomas W.

I was thinkin' that the wire the springs are made from might have a hairline crack in them from the bulk supplier. Or, during the forming process the crack instigator develops and propagates with repeated usage. These things happen in mass production and an acceptable rate of failure is determined. I don’t imagine testing each individual lot of wire or springs for fractures, etc. (Too cost prohibitive except for NASA and such.)

1% is a very good failure rate.

I was figurin’ it could be a distraction from the cost aspect. Knives aren’t exactly a high profit item. It has to affect the bottom line. The amount of acceptable returns is determined, of course. But that’s for an economics class.

I trust Kershaw knives partly due to your great costumer service. When someone asks (usually concerning the AOs), I give ‘em the big “thumbs up.” I’m not an expert (thank goodness), but I’ve owned and try out a plethora of knives.

Less than 1%! That is outstanding. I can hardly wait to get my sweaty little hands on that sweet G10 S30V Leek.
Keep up the good work Thomas W, and thanks for hanging in here. I've seen many a good man, and many a good product take a thrashing on this forum. I think in the end the knowledge gained is worth the punishment. :)

I trust the knowledge gained is worth it as well. I'm kinda enjoying the BF ride so far.

Spring breaks could well last longer :)

I've never felt a problem with the thumbstuds, but those who say they use it manually as a regular one hand opener are surely using the flipper?

I like that Kit Carson flipper on my CRKT M-16 so much I play more with it than with the Kershaw assists, now that I've learned to get it into locking poition with that single thumb flip.

So, maybe try using the knife without the torsion bar for a while.
