Who has used or likes Paul's Hatchet or Paul's Ratchet???

I have a possible trade lined up for a Paul's Ratchet. I really like the looks and concept of them but I have never used one. Does anyone have any real experiences with either of these? Would a small 3' blade work better? I purchased an elk ridge small ax (really a hatchet, $13) which is very similar in size to see if I like it. I like the hatchet a lot but I have not used it yet, and it is a decent size comparison to the Paul's.

If anyone has any real experience using one of these I would love to hear about it. I have plenty of Busse blades and I am trying to figure out if I would use the Paul's. I keep a browning fast attack hatchet in my truck that I use frequently because it stays in my truck and it's there when I need it. I am thinking this could be the same for the Paul's in a backpack with me at all times or whenever I am on the go. It wouldn't be an EDC just a have in the back over an active duty or something like that.

I like that the Ratchet has res-c which is awesome for real users but I like that the Hatchet is INFI and has a talon hole.

Or should I just go with a condor 1lb hatchet or something else? I have a 13" Husqvarna that I have used to take down some very large trees for its small size, but this hatchet by no means will be doing stuff like this. I would use it for basic knife type things and have a lil more oomph in my hands for when I need it.

Thx for the help!

I think you should PM me the guys info lol ill give it a try, will let you know how it went lol

I am curious on this one as well. I have seen these small hatchets and I don't get it. I am sure there is a niche that it fits well, just have not found it. I have the TOPS Knives Wolf pAX 2 Field Axe + Wolf Pup Knife Combo. Its about as small as I would go. These tiny hatchets seem novel. Do they really work, what is some good ideas for use. Really have been wondering about this one. Thanks for starting this post. Curious as to where it goes.

Can't divulge secrets :) I'm up for the Ratchet next.

Its an interesting concept no doubt. I just don't know if I'm better off packing something else or just going with a more traditional blade... I have plenty of 6"-9" blades that are very versatile.

I am not sure how much better the Ratchet would perform vs a swamp rat, or a BATEC or something roughly the same length. It looks like you can choke up real nice, but it seems like if I need some precision I can just bring along a GW or an AD which would be lighter... As we all know, 2 is 1 and 1 is none...

I think we are off to a great start, though! Can't wait for some more info!!!

Not to make things more complicated, but maybe we should add Porkchop in to the mix lol but it might be too big sizewise for these purposes

The pork chops look nice!!! I just don't need one because I already have a pretty good small ax/hatchet in that size, but I wonder if the back of the head on the pork chop would make a good hammer??? My hatchet specifically said, forged head do not use as a hammer or hit on metal objects...

I use mine, more for a gardening tool. It also works good in the kitchen.

It does not have enough weight to it to do any real wood processing.

However, it is very sheeple friendly, compared to some of the large choppers out there.

Mine is quite sharp and it cuts through will hide/hair/scales no problem. Truthfully I use it for cleaning fish and cutting/chopping off their heads. Done the same with small game, but mostly use it to chop the paws when skinning.

It's a strong tool for sure, but I don't carry/use it much as I should.

It is pretty much an ulu knife with a handle sticking out of one side. Very useful for the type of work already mentioned much more than for typical axe chores.

I didn't know they were called ulu knives but that is exactly how I imagined the Paul's to be. It seems like it would be great in a kitchen! I could see how it would be useful for fish as well. Does anyone who uses theirs regret getting it to use? Or regret not using it enough?
I wouldn't want it for "axe" chores just chores for a 3" blade that might need a little more ruggedness behind it. Not that is really a problem with INFI or SR101...

I beat the hell outta mine. They are great for just about anything. You can skin a car, chop veggies, auto work, small entry tool, flip bacon, make fuzz stick's, split log's, pound tent stake's, can opener, chop your way through a cinder block wall, attach it to a stick and make a nice hawk.

I was wondering how long it would take for Oge to chime in:) He's probably this model's biggest fan.

Thank's Greg. I just seen this.

It is one of two busse's I dearly love. For an all around light carry do all. You would be hard pressed to beat a Paul's. I do prefer the hatchet to the ratchet. The resp-c is very comfy, and very non slip. It is bulkier than micarta though. I prefer the slimmer micarta because of footprint. Lashing it to stuff is a lot easier, and more secure. The handle tube's help a great deal with this. Don't get me wrong. You can do the same with the ratchet. It's quicker with the hatchet.

I seem to remember something about Paul's Hatchet being developed to assist Jerry's father in trimming cherry tree limbs.

Paul was his name. Hence, Paul's hatchet. It was made for him as an arborist tool.

Some great info!!! I am looking forward to checking one out! Seems like a good all around. Seems like this thread has went deep and found some of the handful of users out there!

I'll try to put some pic's up this evening. If not tonight, definitely tomorrow night.

I have a SRKW Ratchet that I have owned for years. I only use it when company is over to trim the end of my cigars off.

It makes a statement with the in-laws around the holidays for sure. ;)
