Just wanted to see which of you actually uses their knives. I just started my collection with a Cold Steel SRK. This gets used almost every day, I work as a shipper/reciever and use it to cut open boxes/crates/rope/plastic straps/etc. It is a very good tool to open crates beacuse its so good as a prying tool, It doesnt even flex at all. Im getting a CS Super edge and Kobun(420 steel not carbon V, it shouldnt see as much use so the extra $50 was not justified). I will use the super edge every day to open little boxes and cut down boxes. The Kobun I will use as well as my SRK for a EDC(I will always have one or the other but not both), The SRK is kinda big sometimes so when i feel like something smaller/lighter i will use the kobun. So what do you guys use your knives for? Or do they just sit on the shelf?

I think the best way to describe my knife "situation" is that I collect using knives;)

I have way more knives than I NEED[need is a communist concept], but EVERY knife I own gets used. Some get used ALOT. As far as collecting goes, a knife means more to me after it accumilates "memories" after being used. I hope that makes sense.....

This Simonich CETAN went on quite a few deer and hog hunts with me, and served as the first proto for the production CUDA TALON. This knife and I have been through thick and thin together, and thorefore means alot to me and my collection.

Happy Holidays,

In my definition you are a user and not a collector. You get to be a collector when you have just too many knives to ever use many of them. Additionally, you would probably have knives that you wouldn't use since that would mar them.

Personally, I think that I am both a user and a collector. About half of my knives I use and the other half I just enjoy playing with.

:D :D :D

Collects knives? Uses Knives? Gee this must be a knife forum. Damn all this time I thought this was a lonely hearts club.

I won't own one that I would never use, but, alas, I own too many to use any of them frequently.

All of them are favorites for different reasons, or I would not keep them either.

It's weird (or not), I don't have what I would call an EDC either, they're all EDC's some times :) ;)

I too have far more knive than I need, and even when I buy something that I tell myself I'm going to sit on and not muck up, it always seems to find its way into my pocket, getting taken apart or sharpened or slashing thru a box or cutting up food or something. (Except for the Civilian.) I guess I'd rather have my blades out so that I can play with them and cut stuff as opposed to keeping them "NIB" sitting on a shelf out of site.

I struggled with use it or collect it until I actually purchased my first custom. Once I held it in my hand and saw the quality differences between it and most production models, I had to use it. IMO a knife that isn't meant to be used really isn't a knife.

I have used almost every knife that I have ever bought. I guess I find a knife that I think is "perfect" and before too long I find it lacking in some aspect so I replace it with a different knife (the new perfect knife, so to speak).
And sometimes I'll decide that the older one really was the "perfect" knife after all, so I'll go back to carrying that one until I find the next "perfect" knife.
Around and around it goes. It really is a sickness (but a wonderful one!).
The few that I don't use are usually odd little knives that I don't want to loose, or they are too bulky or heavy for everyday carry.

Good luck,
Allen.

PS. The latest perfect carry combo: Leatherman Micra and CRKT BladeLOCK.
But I still fidget with the Victorinox Cadet...

I do not really collect knives. I use all the knives that I own. That being said I would love to actually have the money to collect some of my favorite knives such as those by Loveless, Moran and Scagel. It is unlikely that if I owned knives by these great makers that I would use them.

I am glad so many of you guys use your knives so us collectors can learn which ones to buy! I have a bunch but almost always grab my Greco Companion when I need to cut something. It is a great all around utility knife.

I have more knives than I need, therefore I am a collector....

I intend to use every knife I buy, if it does not find a use I get rid of it.

On a board like this I would theorize there are very few "strict users" ie those people who buy knives only as a tool.

Most of us are knife enthusiasts that fall into one or more of the following categories:

Some buy and use a variety of knives to explore the limits of blade materials, function, and design

Some buy knives for their artistic or aesthetic value

Some buy with hopes of monetary gain

Some of us are just plain knifeknuts....

:p :p :p

I use knives regularly in my work, though I certainly don't use everything in my collection.

Maybe I'm strange, but I buy all of my customs with intentions of just looking at them (hence, collecting).

When I finally get a scratch or scuff on one, I'll start to use it. I guess it's a pychological thing, weird.

I do have one damascus piece by Devin Thomas that I will not use, it's just a "wall hanger" for me to admire.

I am a collector if military/combat and fighters. My collection is a whopping 1 knife so far. It is a Ka-Bar short that my girlfriend gave me. I swiped the edge on my sharpmaker and put it away.

I'll definitely allow my collection to grow, however, I think my priority is with users. Originally, I thought about getting one or 2 folders and spending the rest of my $$ on collecting pieces. Now, however, I'd rather buy more users. I ENJOY using knives, so I too want a drawer full of quality folders and fixed blades that get rotated!

I am both. I do NOT yet have enough knives in my collection. I use MOST, but there are a select few I plan to pass on to my two Sons, NEW and Unused for THEM to enjoy. I enjoy holding them, and THEY will enjoy USING them.....wolf

I use collectible knives and collect used knives :)
Actually I use the knives I collect, and if I buy a knife, is to use it, at least to some degree. obviously I won't go around chopping wood or cutting nails with a top notch engraved collectible knife, but it won't sit on a stand, too.
I also collect antique or ethnic knives, which don't see much or any use because they usually are suited for tasks I'll not encounter (such as a couple of XVIII century hunting knives used to kill game hand-to-hand) or are not good for anything practical (such as an antique moroccan knife: they value the blades not for how good is the steel, but for how much polished it is...)
