Who here collects mainly just to collect?

Howdy folks,

Even though I grew up on a farm, did a lot of construction work, spent a lot of time in a tent and managed to actually hit a pheasant a time or two, these days I do 3D animation and any kind of construction work I do is remodeling on my house.

As such, the cutting tool I use most when working on my house is a carpet knife. I also abuse wire cutters with the best of them.:D

At the office I carry a Case Medium Stockman or a Benchmade or two on a regular basis. Other than that, I collect pocketknives simply because I enjoy doing so.

I know lots of folks here use most, if not all of their knives on a regular basis, just wondering how many folks collect just simply to collect?

Best,

Heekma

I probably would if the economy didn't suck so bad. I design and modify existing home, and we all know how residential construction is now and days:thumbdn:. I enjoy knives, but right now I have about 20+ knives I have and I feel guilty about having them because I know we can use the money for other things, so I am going to go ahead and sell them all, get a large sebenza, and have a lot of extra cash on hand even after the purchase of the sebenza.

If I was still raking in the money like I was 3 years ago then I would probably keep more of the knives. But right now I look at them and just think "These aren't being used, they are just sitting in my desk drawer, what's the point?"

Now guns, that is a whole other story. Never gonna get rid of those.

I have more collectors than users, but my user rotation has a wide variety to choose from as well.

I'm both a collector and a user.

As mentioned above, with the downturn in the economy I'm not adding many knives these days, but occassionaly manage to treat myself.

I have a knife in my pocket everyday but also 100+ tucked away in knife rolls that rarely leave the house. I'd say I'm a collector.

I just started collecting or fueling my addiction. Whatever you want to call it.:) I do switch up what I can carry for EDC, but some never leave the drawer. I look at it like it is my hobby. The side benefit is that knives are actually functional and could be used for something beneficial if needed. Not like some collections or hobbies. Everything I have so far was bought without the intention of being a safe queen. I don't think I will ever buy a knife just because it looks great without ever wanting to use it.

Likewise, I have 2 EDC BM and i'll rotate in an Apparition every once in a while. just like with my gun's I'm more of a collecter myself.

I have a collection of knives my dad gave me and I'm sure most of them have little monetary value but they are all a keepsake for me so those will be forever keepsakes. The other part of my collection is probably 30 knives that I bought because I liked them and planned to carry them.

I have carried all of them but some are just not what I originally envisioned so they get sold off to fuel another purchase.

I guess I'm a hybrid collector/user/edc'r/rotator

I reckon I do something of both.

Now, I consider every knife in my collection to be a user, and have used every one of them at some time so none of them are "safe queens" or "collectors items". However, I really have many more knives than I realistically need. For example, I have a couple dozen pocket knives of various makes and styles, when really I could get by with just two or three. Same with outdoor knives. I have 6-8 fixed blade knives in the 4-5 inch range (my favorite size for outdoor use), when really one or two would be plenty.

So, most of the knives I own becuase I'm a collector, even if I do get some use out of all of them.

The above defines me. Although I'm not just beginning to "fuel my addiction", I buy the knives I do with the intent to use them and not store them. Sometimes it may be a knife that hangs in a sheath right beside my bed that is there for "after midnight knocks on the door" purpose. But basically I'm a user and a carrier of the knives I buy.

I collect a few things.
Tools... for some reason I'm continually amazed at the tools we've figured out how to make.
Humans are fascinatingly adaptive little buggers.
Old woodworking hand tools are my main thing.
I like just about anything useful to me that was designed and built to a high standard.

I purchase all my knives with full intention of using them, but find I can't bring myself to messing them up :p. If I had only 3 or 4 maybe that would help.
I think this makes me a reluctant collector.

Sure. Even though I carry a pocketknife most of the time and have a couple designated users, nearly all of my knife purchases are set aside and kept in unused condition. Although I do specifically Collect a couple of knife types overall I'm more of an Accumulator.

Based on the % of knives owned, I am:
1% user
29% Collector
70% Accumulator.

I'd love to be a collector, but at this time in my life, true collecting is above my pay-grade. Instead, I enjoy owning a couple knives that really appeal to me that are carried and used daily.

I ended up with as many as 80 nice folders as I acquired them but not because I was trying to collect. Rather, I just fed my addiction as I bought knives that appealed to me. I finally came to my senses and off loaded all but less than 20 now plus I now have funds for new offerings and there are some awesome new knives coming long these days. I already have a preorder list of about 10 great, new folders. Better designs and nice, new steels are always a positive thing for me. I've basically decided some old collectables are only good for just that because the new designs and blade steels are evolving pretty nicely.

So for me, give me someting new to use, not something from yesterday or yesteryear to collect.

Plus I never really made more than $40 or $50 profit by selling VERY collectable NIB knives anyway. And only on a few of them too. Overall, I broke even or lost on many collectable knives.

I am a collector and user. Most of my SAKs for example aren't in my EDC rotation anymore and the ones I bought the last few weeks will probably never be used. But a few SAKs and other knives are still used a lot.

For me it is a mix. Of the folders I have I try to use most of them. The one that does not see any use is a CRK Mnandi which is going up for sale soon. On the other side I collect vintage cleavers. I do use one in the kitchen quite a bit but the rest I restore and don't use too much. I will take one out into the back yard on the weekends to chop up wood and branches. That is simply because it is so much fun swinging an almost 5lbs cleaver that has a 10" blade.

Both. I definitely use knives for survival/hiking, edc and food prep.

I am also a collector of Brend collaborations, CRK, and traditional stockman and trappers by Case, GEC, Schrade (US only), etc.

Yep, looks like for consensus, it is a mix.

For me, I don't buy knives that I just think are plain pretty, but are highly usable.. that being said, there are knives that I think are are of exceptional quality and that I bought knowing that I would never use them. For example, the Microtech Halo V

Im too poor to have knives that sit in my knife box. I would love to have a massive collection, but for now, generally if it doesn't get used, i sell it to fund another knife.

I am a little of both. I have some I collect because I just like them, and some I buy to use. Like many have said, I don't really buy them not to use. For example: I have 4 BM Skirmishes (2 630 and 2 635-limiteds). Since these are out of production and fairly sought after, I hate to use them. For me, a knife like that will be a great hander-downer to my sons. If they ever need money, then there they are.
Some of my others like the ZT 0350 in my pocket gets used and abused daily because it's easily replaced. For me it's a fun useful hobby with investment potential. Besides, I don't golf, so what else do I have spend my money on?
