I've got a small group of knives that are users but the vast majority are more for collecting. They're not high-end knives, just knives I like and in the case of my SAKs, knives I got at clearance prices so I picked them up to add to my collection.
I've been collecting fixed blades recently but because of where I live and my schedule I don't really get to the "outdoors" to make much use of them. At this point they're mostly un-used but I wouldn't hesitate to use them when the need arises.
Then there are some I bought with no real intentions of using, I just wanted to have them. For example knives that I bought multiples of like a bunch of my SAKs in different colors, or my Spyderco G10 Caly3. I knew the Caly3s were discontinued and I had the opportunity to get two so I bought one as a user and the other as a back up if anything should happen to the first.
I have a tendency to buy quality over quantity and a lot of stuff I don't use because I'm "scared" to damage them. This has happened countless times with clothes. I get a shirt or pants or whatever and like them so much I rarely use them. What happens after that? A couple years later that clothing is out of style and I end up never wearing it.
My wife's been drilling it into me that if I buy something nice, use it! You don't know when you'll breathe your last breath and go without ever enjoying your purchase. I've finally been trying to adopt this mindset that I should use my stuff (including my knives) if and when I want. We only get one go-around so why buy the nice pretty hi end ones and never use them, only to die and they be given to someone who has no idea of their value, etc, and they beat the snot out of them like they were a Wal-Mart special? If you've spent the $$ on them then you should enjoy them.
