Back in the day Mad Dog knives used to be all the rage, anyone here still own them? I dont see much talk of them really. Obviously didnt stand the test of time. Were they just a flash in the pan fad?

i have a SEAL ATAK 2 FWIW, i like it a lot, i havent used it a whole lot but i'm sure it would work fine if i did, i dont know that its really any better than say a busse though, and they are kinda high $$, but i have no complaints with mine at all, i really like the ergo's on it.

Nice ergos on my Voodoo Hound. The kydex sheath is the best I have seen so far (have not had the opportunity to try out a custom JSP sheath yet). I bought it from a 3:rd party.

/C.

I dont think quality was ever the issue with Mad Dog's, only avalabilty. I've always wanted one but I've only ever seen/held one(that was for sale) in like close to 20 years. Now I did get a Mission MPK in A2, same ergo's,cuts like a razor and they called my house, TWICE, to make sure I was getting what I wanted and then again to see if I was happy with it. NOW THATS CUSTOMER SERVICE!

I have one. Classics for sure.

They are still available, but have become quite expensive. If you are looking for something in particular and want it relatively soon, the thing to do is probably to notify a dealer who has some leverage. If price is important, I guess it would be best to place an order in the conventional manner, but I think the wait is out around 4 years now.

I see them infrequently in WTS ads, and the sellers generally seem to want fairly high prices. They pop up on Eyab from time to time, too. I think secondary market prices have about doubled over the past 8-10 years; maybe a little more in some cases.

You might try a few WTB ads, and see what kind of interest you attract - maybe here and on USN. Seems like all the MD trading activity had moved to TF 5 or 6 years ago. My account over there lapsed and they wouldn't respond to emails when I tried to re-register, so don't know what the deal is there. I'm probably not in the market for any MD's at current prices anyway.

I have three and have used the ATAK2 quite a bit. I bought them a very long time ago at substantially lower prices than they command today. The edges are hard and stay sharp for prolonged use. I like the handles a lot. The sheath on the ATAK2 is also well designed.

Kevin McClng was always far ahead of his time with his knives.

I have a fixed blade made from G11 (one piece blade and handle) that was made 15 years ago.

For 1500+ simoleans, one would expect the knife to be warranted for life...not the life of the owner...:(

They do look awesome, but I'll stick to the Busse kin...of course if money was no object....the stable would be very full indeed, of many flavors.

I remember how Kevin would call the Sebenza the folding MD. I kind of see the small MD's as fixed Sebenzas. They are just impossibly classic, in the same way the Sebbie is. If only you could call Kevin up and order and 1/8" thick TG Pack Rat... maybe foreshortened 1/2", for $300, delivered in 6 months. Talk about a dream knife...

I used to own one of his all ceramic knives. I ended up trading for another knife.

i have about $500 in my ATAK 2 what do they go for now?

i also agree with the sheaths being well designed.

Ive talked with Kevin on 2 occasions. Once at his shop in Paulden and the other at a knife show (years ago). He certainly is a polarizing figure. At that time I could have purchased a new SEAL ATAK for $250.00. Didn't have the cash then but would have been a good investment. His stuff is good but collector value has put it out of my range.

Between $1000 - $1300.

really?

into the safe mine goes lol.

they really are cool knives though, i was looking at mine today after reading this thread, the handle ergo's are top notch, the serrations are sharp (and appear they would be easy to sharpen, unllike some) and the sheath is also top notch. a really good fixed blade, if i was gonna fight someone with a knife (i hope to never do that by the way) i would pick my ATAK2 first outta all my knives, its almost like a kukri and would be very effective i have no doubt.

i dont know if i would go $1300 on one though, like i said before a busse is also a helluva good FB.

edgedspecialities has a really good virtual tour of the Mad Dog workshop. It gave me a new appreciation for the knives.

But I can't get around O-1 as the choice of steel. Especially given the prices.

Other than that they look pretty awesome.
