Who here owns Mad Dog knives?

Are they still the Seal knife?

A "SEAL" knife is whatever a SEAL chooses to carry. You won't find the same knife strapped to every active SEAL. Knives will also change depending on mission and need.

Don't think that every SEAL can afford a Mad Dog knife, nor even wants one.

If you want an ultraKool knife that is cheaper and easier to get, look into Mission titanium knives.

IIRC mad dog made a run of ATAK's for the SEAL's but thats been yrs ago, i doubt any of them are left nowadays.

IIRC he made ~ 100 or so.

but thats been a while ago, 8 or 10 yrs.

most SEALs carry what they are issued FWIW & they havent called me to tell me what they are issueing now lol, though i am sure i will hear from NavSpecwarGroup soon.

i'm pretty sure he made a run for them but like i said thats been a while, i dont think he has any official capacity with them nowadays at all.

I've owned five MD's. They are good knives (but not wonder blades) with great sheaths. I think the hype is extreme and the current prices a bit silly. I find the various Fallknivens just as good for any uses I might have.

so can these be found somewhere for sale? what metal is used for the blade? where are these made?

I agree. I have owned a couple and sold them....

The price on the market is outrageous.
I found Mad Dog's to be fighter-based style of blades. Not what I was looking for in an 'all-arounder.'

I'm also not the biggest fan of selective tempering... Although I can understand the science behind it, I was not impressed with the results. Too much room for error or differing heat treatments...

The ergonomic handle was nice, but again, contoured more with the fighter intent....

A really good friend of mine is a regular over at tacticalforums and he drinks a lot of Mad Dog Kool-Aid. I just don't get it. Kevin's knifes are uber-tactical fighting knives that are way overpriced with extremely hard edges. The only good thing about them in my mind is the handles and the kydex sheaths which I believe Kevin makes as well.

For the money, there are ample other knife selections you could make that would serve you just as well or better.

how overpriced are we talking about? a friend just offered me a YFA1 with a production # 038 of only 38 produced. Saying it is worth $2500. Does that sound about right to you guys?

sounds high to me but then again i thought the ATAks were still less than $1K lol,

The Ataks were/are cool....The question back when, while Fighting Knives magazine was published(who actually put him on the map) Was his choice of A2 and the blade coating,And the testing of his knives. The coating did not prevent the rust or corrosion, and while the handle passed most every test, was not "bulletproof" as was claimed. There was the downfall,Great knives, back in a day where B.S. claims sold a knife. Then people grew up and learned.

That was at first, then switched to A2,no better results....Actually Mission knives is basically what Mad Dog started, only improved....???

DeCanon,

Mad Dog knives have never been made of A2. That statement alone shows you know nothing of what you speak.... And what was the downfall??, Even at todays prices, why do they sell out in a matter of days sometimes even hours???...I'm not sure I would call that a downfall.

Good ergonomics, nice lines and over-engineered with the user in mind.

That said, for what they're trying to get these days there are many other knives I'd choose first. They're an okay knife with a huge hype factor. Came of age during a time when some fellas thought a fabricated "spec ops" background was a good marketing strategy.

As far as them "flying off the shelves", guess it depends where you're at. Northern Knives had an Attack Thing that sat in a display case for years. They presently have two Panthers, one of which has dropped in price to under a grand.

Contact these guys if interested: http://www.northernknives.net/index.html

I am familiar with Northern Knives.
They just became a new Mad Dog dealer.

The ones they had listed on their website didn't last very long. They had an ATAK 2 and a Pygmy ATAK. Looked to be late 90's vintage. They were only listed a few days before being sold.

They put those others up on the web site, they would not last very long. A Panther for under a grand is a steal. An ATAK Thing is elusive, so i can't imagine that one lasting long either. You can't just keep them under a counter in ALASKA...You got to get them out to the guys that want them.

I know of one dealer that recently got a good number of ATAK's in...The all sold in days. For over a grand a piece...

starett 496-O1.

nice sheaths, only problem was if you don't like the ergos too bad. 100s of models all feel IDENTICAL in the hand. i was at MD tactical a couple years ago and played with maybe ....12? all the same ergos.

the GUY is a JOKE. look up his book. its a laugh riot.......

the knives are classics though. i keep looking for a thrashed one so i can use it no guilt, never seen one. they're certainly good investment pieces.

if they sell for over a grand a pop whats the downfall lol?

I am fortunate to call Kevin a friend and a hunting buddy. Down to earth and honest as a straight arrow ...... can be very abbrasive if your love PC! I have a whole collection of MD knives and he is always happy to accomodate a extra large/small hand. Just call and speak to him. Ergonomics on his blades are superior to any one size fits all around. His knives are very well designed and I doubt over-designed is true. Power to weight is well ahead of any knife on the market and I have over 200 so not an idle comment. I have an few MD's that are hard hitters but on the price ...... each one is cut by band saw and hand ground, tempered and hand fitted with grips and a sheath. I have seen Kevin in action in his shop in Az and he is a craftsman of note. Free hand grinding is an art and doing that one on an 18 inch blade ..... well, beyond any I have seen to date without a jig and light years ahead of my ability.

Not for everyone but then, highly specialized equipment never is!!

If I could only have one knife ...... it would be a Mad Dog Destroyer!

Regards from Africa
