I'm sorry.. this is long.. start early in the day...

I am new here, and people here on the forums do not know me. There is something that made not so happy recently, and that does not happen often (I am usually very happy, hence my so called 'flight name' as people has labeled me in the past). Please note, that my intent of joining the forum here, was not in regards to any of this. I've been very tired as of late, because I have not gained back much of my sleep when the flooding down here in South Carolina occurred.

When I am not doing my full time job, I have a very small web site that two other people help me maintain in regards to knife reviews. Sometimes, companies offer to send us a knife to review and about 98% of the knives that get, we donate out, mainly to active military, volunteer fire departments, ect. The other 2%, I sometimes keep if it help out with my daily ops at work. My team an I do all of that, with no profit whatsoever.. we do that just for the joy of doing so.. in regards to giving to locally to those individuals that could use said items. I will "not" post that link \ url to my small site, as I do not think that it is ethical for me to do so.

I rarely post this, but for the past 15 years, I have been assisting in certain operations, and even responding to disasters nation wide and also training people in certain skill sets that I have in my full time job. I am just a "guy", I am not a hero.. I help out protecting and assisting in certain areas when needed. And sometimes, I volunteer in assisting my local town in the same way, as I like to give back. I just celebrated 15 years working in those sort of operations and as such, an I was awarded a little bit of money for that milestone, which was very unexpected. So I decided to get a KA-BAR knife, as I have my grandfather's KA-BAR from WWII and I thought that I would get a Black Tanto Short with a leather sheath, maybe for a more modern look. I actually really wanted to have "something solid" going to back and forth to my local work dty site. There is no knife length laws in South Carolina "as in for lawful purpose".

Where I made one mistake, is I thought that I could do a review on this knife and maybe KA-BAR would send me their hard sheath for this knife. They did not.. but regardless of any intent of reviewing any of their products, I still received the knife. My main purpose, was so I could have that as a solid fixed blade on me during daily ops.

The knife is is solid and great, it really is. It's a great U.S.A. made knife. It's made just like I thought it would be. The sheath however, has a gouge mark and line on the front, under the logo. I posted that on the KA-BAR form, Guyon pulled my pictures off of Facebook and posted them onto the form to show people what I was talking about.. which saved me a step.. and the manufacture did not answer my concern directly. I also did echo my concerns on to their Facebook page before that, and the rep there said that it was not a defect as far as they were concerned.

The reason why I post all of this, is I maintain honesty, integrity and truthfulness in everything I do.. it's who I am, balls to bone. When Guyon closed my thread in the KA-BAR fourm, he did so because KA-BAR told him "the back story", and I have no problem with him closing the thread and he seems like a very nice guy.. but the "real" back story, is ^ this ^ above. Now it's not the defect in the sheath per se that is bothering me, it's the over all principal of the matter that makes me unhappy, and how KA-BAR so easily dismisses my concerns on the sheath as a some sort of "back story". I understand that the sheath can be fixed.. people think it's not a big deal… just as if someone bought a new car and there was a some dent or ding on the front hood of the car, or if someone bought a new flat panel TV and it had a scratch on the screen.. all of that can be fixed. I also understand that they (KA-BAR) pays the forum here for that forum space.

So what I will do with this KA-BAR knife that I have? I will take it.. and I will now give it to an active dty member in military. After all this above, I just can't keep this knife knowing more about the company. Giving the knife away, represents my past 15 years of honesty, integrity and truthfulness and that dedication will be past on to.. and I am certain "appreciated", to that member of the military who I give the knife to. And so much very more, then the name of the company that is stamped on it (as I am now certain), has none. I appreciate your time reading this.. and again. I am glad to be here.

FWIW happytom, I understand. I probably wouldn't be happy about paying full price for a blem item either.
If the sheaths are indeed +/- $10, as stated in the other thread, it's a small price to pay for a happy customer.

I checked out a pic of the sheath and it looks more like an imperfection than a defect. For a $50-$60 knife that's going to be used, personally it wouldn't bother me in the least.

On a $11.50(price on Kabar's website) sheath, I wouldn't doubt that a good number of those sheaths have some sort of imperfection like that.

If we're talking a couple hundred dollar custom, I probably wouldn't be too happy about that either.

I don't think this is so cut and dry. The bold part especially is concerning. You need to be more specific with this "back story". The claims you are making are against a solid company with a very good reputation. You also seem to be trying to pull at our emotions by wrapping yourself in the flag as you give away knives to our military. Good on you for doing that but it is of zero relevance here and those that do such things in good grace don't need to mention it to prove their worth of character.

So, did you buy this knife or was it given to you by Ka-Bar? Your words are "I still received the knife". What does that mean? The way it is coming across to me is that you tried to get free stuff in return for your review. When that didn't work out you got sour grapes. Sure, no one wants to receive a cosmetic defect in a new product. Did Ka-Bar refuse to correct the issue before or after you tried to shake them down for free stuff? Please explain your self more clearly. That doesn't mean long winded, it means with accuracy.

As it stands you are the one coming across not looking so good here. You are also not looking for a solution to a problem but rather to smear a good company. I think you will find that most who come to the GB&U with no problem to solve but rather to complain end up with the egg on their face.

We don't know the facts here. It is one side of the story and frankly the side we do have is fuzzy at best. The way I read it he tried to shake them down for free stuff in return for a review, then complained about the sheath, and is now trying to pull at our emotions by wrapping himself in the flag and dragging a good company's name through the mud because he didn't get his way. Should Ka-Bar replace a sheath for such a "customer"? I should hope not.

There is more than meets the eye here.
What we have here is a person trying to extort a company for free items for "review".
Ka-Bar doesn't play this game, and this person has now used the Ka-Bar Facebook page and now the BFC Ka-Bar and Good, Bad, and Ugly subforums to grind a personal axe.
This is not an axe he should continue to grind at BFC.

In short, yes.

The "free stuff" item in question is a Glass Filled Nylon sheath that happytom decided he needed for his review.
When Ka-Bar did not readily send out a free sheath, the complaints about an indention in the leather sheath began, first on Facebook and then here on two different subforums.
Other moderators agree that leveraging the forum's public presence for material gain is not welcome. Nor is such sour-grapes, mud-dragging.
