i bought a tan one.its my first oppertunity to finally get a scrapyard.my only question is i notice they went a little thinner on the blade compared to other knives they offer of this lenght. is this ment to be a lighter duty knife? i wonder how it will hold up for chopping and batoning and what not? i bought this knife so i could retirie my old reliable cold steel recon scout. will this knife be as durable?
the .270-.285 they have been known to use is complete overkill,.250 in a scrapyard knife is twice as much as you will ever need.
SR77 is really S7 high shock, jackhammer bit steel as you probably already know so there's no way in hell your going to harm it in anyway by hitting it with a stick while batoning or chopping wood.
hell,go chop concrete with it if you like.all you'll do is ding up the edge.you will never break this knife.
as far as the cold steel recon knife goes i would compare it like this.
while the CS is a decent knife it is a small, dry twig and the SOD is a piece of steel re-bar like they use in concrete, seriously and no disrespect .
there is just no comparing the 2 knives or the 2 companies.its not that CS is bad its just that scrapyard and any busse product is that good.
.... and here is the main reason why.from the scrapyard web-site
"Following standard ASTM heat treating and tempering protocols, a blade made from a standard tool steel can be "properly" heat treated and tempered in less than 1-1/2 hours and brought to a hardness of 57-59 Rc. So what! Take one of our blades that has received our proprietary heat treat and tempering protocol of over 40 hrs. and it will also test out at 57-59 Rc. The fact is that one of our transversion wave tempered SR-77 blades that tests out at 57-59 Rc will spank the living hell out of a standard heat treated knife blade out of the same material that also has a 57-59 Rc hardness."
