Who is going winter camping this year?

I want to get out there soooooo bad, right now. My wife says I look pathetic when I'm staring out the window, wait for the snow to fall.

Sounds like if I do try, I need to find something for a second pad. Hmm, I'll have to start looking around.

I'll be heading out again with some friends. We'll do quinzees and maybe an igloo. Had a blast last winter. I have a 0C rated down bag (western mountaineering summerlite) which wouldn't cut it, so I borrowed my wife's -12 Asolo. I was boiling in it! The temp was -20C outside; inside the quinzee it hovered around 0C. Very nice, but the potential to get pretty wet. We'll do a quinzee again, but I may bring in a bivy just to keep dry.

We'll hit the same location probably: Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Alberta. Here's last year's trip:

most likely I will go winter camping at Silent Lake Provincal Park
I'll be using my MEC tarn2 tent, and my cabelas -20f sleeping bag
Only reason to use the PP is parking . All my other "campsites" will have no winter parking . In the summer I use my motorcycle to get to my "crown land" campsite(s).
The Tarn2 tent is supposed to be only a 3 seasons tent but unless theres a big snowfall I think it will do ok in the winter as well.

dude did no one ever tell you to NOT eat the yellow snow?
OK i give up what is that?

I'm pretty sure it's a shot of the quinzee from the outside and the yellow glow is from some sort of light inside the quinzee (candle perhaps?)

Am I right?

Yup. It was my friend's lantern up in the main chamber about 6' back, and up a foot or two of rise.

I usually camp/winter camp every 3rd weekend; heading out next weekend actually. Backcountry skiing is usually the objective. Though sometimes, I just like to build myself a good snow couch and kick-back and relax.

We get a lot of snow where I'm from, 15-25' is pretty common. I use a Bibler Fitzroy tent, Therm-a-rest pad, and a Feathered Friends Ibis [0F/-18C] down bag [with vapor barrier liner on extended trips].

Winter camping is my favorite: you can bring good food [store it in the snow], water is plentiful, there's no one around, bears aren't a problem, you can make furniture, you can ski out [i.e. fast exit], beer stays ice cold.

As long as you have the right gear, winter camping is sweet.

I'm going camping on the 29th of this month, my wife thinks I'm crazy cause I'm just taking the basics!!!!!!!!!!!

"Who is going winter camping?"
You all are! At my place! In february or march if you show up!!!!

I'm not sure if there will be much snow on the ground by then, but it will be brisk (but not tooo brisk) and hopfully in the 0 or teens just to avoid the wet stuff.

no offense meant, but that's a good way to ruin your boots with the fire, brother.

i hate ruined boots.

Thats okay man, those are actually my slippers. My real boots are in the cabin :D

I STILL WANT TO KNOW WHO's GOING CAMPING????

Especially now that Joezilla invited us all it his place and he supplying a bunch of teens to do our bidding!!!

I just spent an hour or so helping mark out and measure the fabric for a new hammock underquilt my fiance is sewing for me. This should have about 4" of loft, using about 18 ounces of 800+ fp down. I expect it to take me down to at least -10, possibly -20. That should keep me pretty toasty this winter

I should be going for a couple of days next week. Should be in the 20s here. Will post some pics when I get back. It should be a Merry Christmas in the woods for me.

I planned on building a new pulk this year, but have been looking for the "perfect" sled for a couple years with no luck (and not willing to spend huge $$$ on one).

But, I am really excited about the project because I just picked up this Pelican sled today:

This size and depth were exactly what I wanted. Now I need to build up the pulk poles. I plan to use the ball swivel rod ends, and then use my kifaru waist belt. If I am carrying my day pack, I can attach to the waistbelt. If I don't want the bag, the waist belt is removable. Gotta love kifaru!
