...BUT KEEP IN MIND these guys that are telling you that you can’t get Damascus for $40, have no idea what they are talking about....
I don't think I have ever gotten into with anyone on this site....but you are hard to resist. Obviously you can get cheap damascus, but the reality is you aren't going to get cheap damascus that is ACTUALLY what it is being sold as. The guys on this forum absolutely know what they are talking about.
This will be my one comment about you. I am not going to waste any more time on this. I would much rather be learning from people who know something about making knives.
 
Question....

How do they go about making this "cheap" damascus? Does it not have to still go through all the same steps involved in normal damascus making? What is inferior about it?

Hub caps.....swing sets..... scrap wire..... pig iron...

It may not have harendable steel in it. It may be 42RC....
