Who is your favorite maker of Damascus?

My favorite maker of laminated alloys is my friend @nighthaxan, aka Charles Roddenberry. He makes "oh mai" among other strange laminates, using ferrous and non-ferrous layers, including copper. Someday maybe I can strong-arm him into making me a bar big enough so I can make a small sword out of it. X]

Yep Charlie Mike that'd be bad. I've heard of others having troubles with bad welds etc but its just not been my experience. Occasionally a billet will have a bad spot but I've learned to cut around it, kinda like leather for sheaths. Cut out and profiled 26 blades from his dammy yesterday.

I have a few damascus knives from Ray Rantanen (blade-maker-2000) on ebay. He makes some really tough damascus and I like his knives. His blades are made of 224 layers of O-1 tool steel, S-2 shock steel ( jack hammer bits) and mild steel. He also makes some more conventional knives that are more reasonably priced.

I have a really nice folder with the DragonScale damascus. The maker said the stuff is equivalent to 154cm for edge retention (which might be good or bad news depending on your sharpening preferences).

Armour Core, the san mai steel made with AR500 steel plates, takes an amazing etch, but the core is actually quite soft and not ideal for knives. (Also per the maker who made me a knife with it).

Chad Nichols...

Not only does he have the best materials used, he has patterns only one can imagine.

Who else uses Stellite, 3V, Elmax, S35VN, Etc. Most makers like to use the soft low end (PM) steels. I'd like Damasteel if they actually bothered to use a steel that held an edge for a while.

I have a couple but I have no favorites or even preferences. Don't buy them any more because I know I'll never use one.

Old Dr. Ray Rantanen (retired NASA Rocket Scientist): He had a heart replacement valve put in a few years ago. This year he went septic and he had stomach surgery. He told everybody that he is going to make another 100+ knives this year. I am sure his totem pole making days are over with. Dr. Ray is one tough old bird. I am buying a 7" blade drop point O-1 tool steel maple wood fighting knife from him next month.
