Who keeps extra gasoline in their vehicle? - Questions

I've also carried extra on my bikes with the small tanks.

If you want a cool way to store backup fuel you could get an lpg conversion. You keep your original gas tank and put in a cylinder to store the lpg. Probably double your range and it's all very safe and saves you money and runs cleaner on the lpg! Just the upfront cost here is around 1000 so it's probably around the same there..

You could also potentially use the lpg for a cooker/heating in your camper, haven't looked into it but I know on a lot of the boats here they're using it and claiming they buy it all for heating/cooker therefore no tax then use it for the engine as well or instead.

I know many people that carry it in the right can but either on back of a jeep or back of a open truck. I wouldn't carry it anywhere in an enclosed area. In TN even if it is stored inside in a fire cabinet the cabinet must be vented to the outside.
I have never had any problems storing the plastic cans in my garage but I have had a couple of those swell to the point it looked like they might burst while sitting in the sun.

Its not a large volume but they do make small bottles of emergency fuel to run in unleaded engines that is safe to store and transport inside a car.

How about replacing the sending unit in the gas tank. That's usually the problem when fuel gauges go wacky assuming it's not a bad ground. Most p/u beds come off by removing six or eight bolts, a few trim screws, and unclipping a wiring harness. Two people can lift an empty bed no problem. Then you can easily remove the sending unit/fuel pump assembly. Much easier than doing the same thing in a car where you have to empty and drop the tank. For the price of two decent fuel cans the problem should be solved in the matter of an hour or two.
