Who likes tanto, and why?

I love the "traditional" Japanese blades... and some of the nontraditional too.

my favorite tanto would probably be the emerson cqc 7b, it has a nice aggressiveness to it.

I always prefered an American tanto with a combo edge (I know, gross right?)for my work knife. I used to work at a mine and used my knife not just for cutting. I like how the short edge at the tip can be used as a scraper and also because of the angle it's easier to cut (for example) something at arms length at the bottom of a hole. Just seemed a little tougher and easier to sharpen. I also like having two points.

I've never been much into tantos but I must admit that I've never really given one much of a try. I might need to get a BM Stryker or trade my spearpoint CQC-7A for the 7B soon. I've used the drop point design my whole life so I'm trying to broaden my horizons a bit and give others a chance. I do however really like the spanto grind on the XM-18. I recently carried and used one for a week with the passaround that is going on and I found it very ingenious. You have the wedge grind with a realy stong thick tip and belly as well for slicing cuts.

I like them. i don't use them much but I think both east and west versions look great, dig the grinds. I have a Gunsite that I would only ever use in a SD situation. I only carry it when I'm cycling or running errands late at night.

To be honest I used to find them cool. But to me they were more of a pain to sharpen than a re-curve. I don't know how that's possible but it just was.. Thats not the main reason though. It was because they were made with one purpose and that was stabbing things and killing. And I had it as my self defense weapon since it was my blur which was assisted opening. I quickly learned from one of my police friends that if i get caught with it they will only see it as a deadly weapon where as a normal knife like say my persistence would have a purpose as a tool in their eyes. I talked to many officers, and though karambits are only for self defense or most of the ones ive seen... Are actually more approved than a tanto not sure why that is. But one of my friends had a knife that was almost taken from him and then the officer gave him a free 5.11 Tactical Karambit and said that it was a better choice. (not sure if all of that made sense, im going off like no sleep right now)

I don't care too much either way. If there's a knife that I like in general and it's tanto it won't make or break the deal. I prefer wharncliffes to anything else.

I just looked at a CRK Lg Sebenza with a Tanto blade config. If I had the $$$$ it would be on it's way here. ;)

That's a very sweet tanto. I like the less acute junction and slightly rounder transition at the tip, rather than the squared off tanto grinds. I like tantos either way, but this example of the LUM tanto is excellent.

it's s very special design, thank you, if you can imagine it, Bob made this for me before he passed as an every day carry knife for me while working. Since this wonderful designer passed I can't even think about carrying this knife.

You're welcome. It's got some history huh? Maybe it'll find a bed in one of those knife display holders for your mantle or some other nice spot. I don't blame you for babying it, I would too. :)
