I thought that would get your attention...

I'm a bit new to WSS - have been lurking here for a couple months - and I have a question for you SAK users. Has anyone come up with a "legitimate" wilderness use for the corkscrew on so many SAKs? Mine has always seemed like excess baggage to me, except for the obvious uncorking duty.

Any thoughts?

NMjoe,

There was a recent thread here about "worthless bottle openers". I disagree on both counts. I routinely open beer with my Trekker, and my Champ has opened an awful lot of wine bottles in the wild, accounting for a number of tipsy women and some danged fine memories... But thats just me.....

For that reason I usually opt for the phillips, but I do have several with the corkscrew for wine duty. After all it is the swiss we're talking about.

holding my eyeglass screwdriver
using as a fid to undo knots
using as a boothook for tightening laces/bindings

like all SAK implements, use your imagination

mneedham knows the score....

Scenario 1:
Lady: 'excuse me sir, do you have a screw driver that I can borrow?'
Man: nothing said. Why - because he wakes up alone in the woods, with nothing but a screwdriver. Come on, there wasn't no lady asking about no stinking screw driver. Hell there ain't anything around here that you can unscrew except maybe your libido..

Scenario 2

Lady: 'hey there big guy, wouldn't happen to have a cork screw would you....Oh and a big bottle of wine ????'
Man: 'why yes I do - here it is......oh and here is my bottle of wine, you know, usually when I'm backcountry camping I try to save a few ounces, but a little voice just told me I should bring this pinot noir along'

Okay ---maybe I'm drinking a bottle of wine right now....Maybe I have an active imagination. Maybe I have no bloody use for a screwdriver at the moment....

Get the corkscrew!

I used the tip of the corkscrew to push out a broken watch wristband pin recently, to replace it with a new one.

I can relate to this scenario, however, on the one occasion this happened to me (bottle of wine and lovely young lady, in a canoe, no less :)), we borrowed a nail off some boater and pushed the cork into the bottle and then, unfortunately , because we didn't have another cork, we had to drink the whole bottle - the young lady and I...................

Get the screwdriver, even though it's one of those funny ones - Philips, I think? Is that what they're called kgd? You know, the ones they use down there in the States?

And to our knot challenged brothers, learn some different knots. :D

Doc

KGD,

LOL, its a mood killer when you can't open the bottle... and thats real survival my friend. BTW, what kind of wine are you drinking? I like Chilean reds.

First off welcome dude...The only sak I have witha corkscrew is my vic rucksack..I certainly use it in the woods but it's also my traveling knife...and when I'm out and about theres always some wine to be opened.

I saw a mod on sosak where a guy turned it into a brass sleeve that held a short firesteel.
I broke my brothers off his wenger using it to dig for maple sap as a kid.
I thought it could drill through several hundred trees.:D
