Who Makes A Good Quality Traditional Pocket Knife?

There is now offered on eBay a Gary Chowder stockman's knife with ATS-34 blades - don't know what the reserve might be but possibly it may end up in your price range.

I know, you want a trapper. But I have tried mightily and in vain to find an online source that tells a non-hunter the practical differences in virtue between a stockman and a trapper and a muskrat and a canoe and a congress and a .... you get the drift. In any case, the suggestion is there in case you can make use of it.

Lenny,

check out the new "Doublecross" by Kershaw. It'll warm the cockells of your heart. Greg at Skylands Cutlery has them. That's where I got mine. I love it. (I even put up my Sebenza to carry my Doublecross)--[becareful it is sharper than you realize!]

Lenny: For the kind of cash you're willing to lay out, why not scour Ebay and find a vintage Case, Robeson, Henkels, Queen, Keen Kutter, etc. that's in mint or near mint condition. I think you'll find there's a whole lot of truth to the saying "they don't make 'em like they used to." Let us know what you decide to do.

Lenny,

I just received my Tear Drop Jack Easy Opener from A. G. Russell. If this knife is a guide to the quality of all Schatt & Morgan knives I would say you couldn't go wrong with the Sway Belly Trapper. Sure the Tear Drop was fairly expensive but no more so that the Spydies I usually carry and the fit and finish are excellent. This is a knife to hand down to your children. I've been told that the same brochure that says the master blades of the Series X knives are ATS34 also says that all the Fire & Wire Tested blades are ATS34, confusing eh? Even if they're not you can always use the ATS34 blade for heavy work and save the 440A blade for when you need a scalpel. That's the way I intend to use the blades of the Teardrop.

Take care,

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

You guys are the best. Once again, great suggestions.
I bit the bullet and ordered a MooreMaker Trapper in Jigged Burnt Orange Bone. The rep called me up personally from TX on Sun to confirm the order. I was surprised I hadn't heard of this knifemaker till about 2 weeks ago. They seem to make a quality product. I'll try to post a pic and short review when I get it.
My problem now is that I want 1 Trapper from each of the companies that's been mentioned in this thread. Ultimately, I'll probably end up with a Queen, Schatt & Morgan, Henckels, German Eye, Hen & Rooster, and any others that I've forgotten. The real challenge is to find these knives in non-SS.
Thanks once again,
Lenny

Lenny:
Please do be sure to post a review of the knife once you've had it a while. I enjoyed your review of the Case trapper. And I've been curious about Moore Maker. Mainly, are they good enough to warrant the hefty price tag.

Lenny,
Please post some pics and a review when you can. I think many of us here are interested.

Paul

Don't bother to look for a recent Queen (Schatt & Morgan) in carbon steel. It doesn't exist.

Smoke this recent SB Trapper over

I am an avid Case collector of new and old, and I agree that the new Case knives are not as impressive as the older ones. However, I do own other brands, and I would agree with the others. The Moore, Eye Brand, and Hen & Rooster are some of my favorites in my collection that are good users. The Eye Brand stag trapper is my favorite for some reason.

Thanks!

I find the Schrade Old Timer knives to be one of the best buys out there. The steel is non-ss carbon (1059 I think) and gets a terrific edge. They are not elite/high dollar knives but they are great quality and will not cost you an arm or leg. I think the saw-cut delrin scales look good and they are comfortable too.</font>
Two of my grandsons have Old Timer knives that are both a little over 2 yers old and both of them will sharpen good and hold an edge reasonably well. One of my other grandson's new one ( 1 month old ) is a different thing. The blade is a hollow ground, and do what I may this knife doesn't even have the same "feel" when you sharpen it and won't take an edge that the older ones will. It almost acts like some of the lower grade stainless. By the way, these are the same type, not two different ones.

Reference to Mooremaker, I have a carbon steel two bladeknife that I bought from them I believe 3-4 years ago and it is sitting in a drawer now because it would not hold an edge to suit me. I have several Ats34's, Aus8a's and VG10's that willbeat it in edge holding.

i have to put a recommendation in for a case CV trapper. i had a little bit of a hassle with mine, which i've had for about a year: originally, it came with a crack in one of the bone scales. i sent it away for repair, and it was replaced. (meaning i've had the replacement for a year, by the way, not that it's been a year for both.) i also have an old timer stockman, which is nice, but not so much to my liking. i've found that it doesn't walk and talk like my case. also, the blades are thinner and bend quite a bit. this may be to your liking, but i don't prefer it.
plus, the old timers are just downright ugly.

take care.
