Who makes best 154CM blades?

Glockman, no disrespect intended but you seem to jump from brand to brand. I know I havent posted here many times but I can recall when the spyderco police was A #1 in your book. All of a sudden benchmade's the best? Do you own an emerson? How can you say Benchmade is the best? Just curious.

Which one do you have?

You think the better edge holding depends on the higher hardness? Guess, MT runs them at exactly HRC60. Right?

Any problems with chipping with MT?

I have the UMS, UDT, and the Mini Socom. The Socom looks as though the the tip could break off at any time because it has a very accute point. So far so good. No problems with chipping. I did have a BM 520 that chipped in the middle of the edge. Then again, I have a Mini-AFCK that has been and done everything with me. No broken tip. No chipped blade. I'd guess that MT's Rc hardness of 60 is why the edge lasts longer.

Emersons web site shows a "hardcore" comparison (Messer Magazine) of a few folders where as the BM Strykers blade broke and the Emerson Commander is still intact. I'm surprised that just 1-2 points difference on the Rc scale made that much of a difference on how brittle a 1/8" thick blade would be. The Stryker having a Rc hardness of 58-60 and the Commander having a Rc hardness of 57-59. You can check it out here at www.emersonknives.com .

Wunderbar,

i guess it depends on the blade. The emerson blade is fairly strong build compared to the BM. To break the Buck would need so much force that it would have been ridicolous (?) for that test (leaning towards real life situations).

And it strongly depends on the construction. The emerson is bending friendly. Just the pivot holds it together in that area. Compared the Spyderco and BM which are stiffer caused by screwed stop pins and more.

I´ve handle an LE M16 and found it so weak in construction that i strongly believe it will never break, but will never pry aswell.

I will do a search because some models were older ones not the actual. F.e. the overall quality, which was low on the comander shall have increased. Maybe the BM was ATS34.

I´ve seen a test where a dutch knifemakers blade (Hill?) was tested. Typical sabre grind HRC 59 154CM. Good resistance to edge smacks on soft steel (due to the hardness) took a bending of 500N without breaking. 5mm thickness in stock.

I guess a good edge comes from a proper ht. No matter the angle. Remember BMs ATS34. Many people weren´t happy with it.

It's hard to make a direct comparison of the different manufacturers when the blade grind and edge profile are different. Apparent differences in edge holding can easily be due to differences in edge geometry.

I took my BM D2 blade on nearly every angle and it always shows the same marks of wear (not strength). Edge quality might depend on ht and steel grade.
