Im looking for some camping tools, mainly a Axe, Shovel, and saw. So whats a good axe, preferably all metal. Must be tough as nails and ment for very heavy chopping, the more heavy it is the better, anything under 10-15lbs, $150 canadian price limit. How about a shovel, would like it to be heavy duty and NOT FOLDING, how is the CS shovel? $100 Price limit canadian for the shovel. And last a good saw, im talking big saw here, will be used to cut trees into sections to be slipt into firewood. Would like it to be able to cut a 20-24" wide tree. A 2 man saw would be ok as long as its portable. Would like price to be under $200 Canadian. Thanks guys!

Rifter,
I looked at an axe once in a local store. I can t remember much about it except that it was Swedish and to quote Robert Crais

"Was so sharp that when you cut yourself, the ******* standing next to you starts to bleed" :D

Give this place the once over.

I did a bit of research when I shopped for my camping stuff. Here is what I found:

Gransfor Bruk axes are great. I just bought the hunter's ax and the design is perfect for my uses.

The forgead head is razor sharp. Ground thin so that you can shave or chop. The handle is very comfortable, straight and well balanced.

There is a large selection of axes to choose from. Generally, for camping, the Hunter's Ax, Small Forest Ax, and Felling ax are good choices.

As far as shovel's go, I use a folding army shovel. It has a little bit of flex due to the collapsable design. I think the CS military shovel would be really good and solid.

Saws are a little more complex. You have to choose the saw to cut the particular size of wood you are looking to tackle. The large saws usually have thicker blades which is not great for thinner branches. They catch and tear at the wood. The small saws are thinner with more teeth, so they won't do well in larger diameter wood due to flex and heat issues.

That said:

There are collapsable 3-piece saws that are highly portable and resemble a hacksaw when assembled. These saws are good for medium to large cutting jobs.

There are also one-piece japanese pruning saws that resemble standard ripsaws. Smaller folding saws are available for gerber. These saws are also good for cutting medium size wood but with a smaller range.

Finally, there is the flexible chainsaw, I forgot the brands, but Tadgear sells them. There is a small and large version. The small version is a wire saw connected by two key-rings. These are good for occasional use on smaller jobs. The large one resembles a bicycle chain with teeth on selected links. This is a heavy duty saw capable of doing jobs that none of the others can do, such as attaching ropes on either end and hefting it over higher branches. This saw can saw logs up to a foot in diameter (or thereabouts) and due to the spacing of the teeth, is not suitable for tackling smaller pieces of wood.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys,

Temper, i was looking for a bigger axe than that, however i did find a great 36" 2 man saw on that site im going to order.

Sundsvall, where can i look at some specs on the Gransfor Bruk axes, i did a search online and could not find anywhere to buy them or look at them.

Rifter, it sounds to me as if you're looking for real professional stuff. You can't do better than Bailey's Logging Supply/ Tuatahi Axes. They have the large saws, and sturdy shovels you seem to be seeking, also. Call them at 800-322-4539.

Here's one for the David Foster Axes, one of the best on the market.
Carson Bosworth Co., 262-767-1090. The D. Foster Ax is $100, U.S.

Snow & Nealley Co. makes fine, professional axes. 800-790-8363

Good luck. L.W.

Does Bailey's Logging Supply have a website? i would prefer to look at some pics before i order anything, thanks!

Rifter, I can't find my Bailey's catalog, so am not sure if they have an Internet site. BUT... if you call that "800" number, they will send you a free catalog, and believe me, it is a marvelous catalog of REAL logging tools, etc.

From your describing what you want, I do not believe you will find those tools at the regular outdoor outlets, i.e., REI, sporting goods/camping/hiking stores, etc.

As you are living in heavy duty logging country, yourself, B.C., I'd look in the telephone yellow pages there and see if there is a logging tools supply company in your area. You might be able to just "walk in" and look at their products, and select what meets your needs.

Best of luck. L.W.
