Hello everyone. I got some great advice with my last post. Thanks to all that had suggestions.

Anyway, who makes the best folder? Who has the fastest opening, sharpest, most dependable blade out there for 200 bucks?

Truthfully I think there are quite a few manufacturers out there turning out a product that is quality wise largly the same. It's all a matter of finding the best combination of features that you want, from lock type, to handle and blade shapes, edge configuration, steels.....etc. In short there is no easy answer. I don't see a clear "best folder" out there, just a whole gamut of stuff that will get the job done.

One of the best and fastest opening folders for about $200 bucks? The Camillus Dominator is what you seek.

Check Swamp Rat Rat Trap. They just star selling it.
Also Buck/Striders are very good and of course BM, Spyderco, Microtech, MOD, Kershaw...

Thanks, Vassili.

I've had my Benchmade/Emerson Spec War Model CQC 7 for about 5 years. I have abused this thing to absolute no end and it still rides in my pocket almost everyday. This is the last folder I have bought. If current benchmade standards are the same, I would suggest one of them for sure!!

*Fastest opening - Benchmades with Axis locks, *sharpest - Spyderco's out of the box, *most dependable - depends on the type of work your knife will need to perform, but I think any reputable manufacturer who puts out a $100 plus knife with a good warantee will be dependable.

I haven't played around with any of the waved knives, but I can open my BM Axis locks so far I don't see the need. Also aren't the waved Emerson knives liner locks? Also they may open fast, but they won't close up as fast as an Axis lock. I also have a Dominator and it is no where near as fast as an Axis lock. With the Dominator you have to pull it out, get your grip right and give a pretty hard push on the flipper. By the time you do all this I would have had an Axis knife open, made the cut, and had it back closed and away again. :)

As far as sharpest, I think that's a a mute point. Any knife can be made super sharp as long as it's made with quality materials. Some knives will come out of the box sharper than others, but most factory edges suck and can be greatly improved if you know how to sharpen a knife.

You won't see the swamprat folder on there site except under the ordering page there is no pic. Go to the shomertech web site and they have a drawing of the folder. There is one thing about swamp rat that beats every other knife company out there, There warrenty covers absoulutly everthing! No exageration you could buy a knife, bring it home and imediately crack the blade in half with a bench vise and they would give you a brand new knife. Not too many companies with that kind of warrenty.

Spyderco, period. Sharpest out of the box, innovative design, and best customer support.

Benchmade. My Axis-lock Benchmades open so quickly, and are so sharp, that I'm supprised that they are legal.:D.

We'd really prefer that you not do that though ;)

:D:D

I'm with Bell: Spyderco. In addition to what Bell said, you also get lots of Research & Development included with each knife!

Spyderco's are more innovative in form and asthetic appeal (ugly/pretty), and Benchmade's seem to be more 'normal' or standbyish.

Both have a zillion models to choose from and you have no choice but to handle them personally or you will never be able to decide. Or worse, you may end up with too many of each (did I just say that? )

In no particular order:

Doug Ritter Griptillian

Buck/Mayo TNT

Swamp Rat folder (forgot its name)

The Kershaw Ken Onion Blur, in my opinion is faster to open than Benchmades due to the assisted opening, sharp out of the box, and has one of the most non-slip grips I've ever had on a folder.

I REALLY recommend it!

I'd go with one of these classics: Spyderco Military or Benchmade 710.

For $200, you fall in the price range where almost all knives have a high-end quality standard, so it's hard to tell which one will give you plain satisfaction, I won't go in the meaningless blablabla telling you this one is the best so don't take this other one...

Just choose from your taste, and after compiling a few models reviews and comments, you will know what knife pleases you and which one will be your next choice, and you will contemplate this wonderful as well as fearful fact: you have entered the endless spiral of the knifoholics... :D

PS: although, as a Spyderco fan, I cannot restrain myself to orientate you toward the Manix, I find that knife to be just superbly thought and made
