who makes the best knife vise?

Hey Dana, I'll try to sketch something soon.

I use 0-1 with a torch to heat treat my blades and "paint" in where the hammond is. I havent use clay on 0-1 but have a picture of one that R.W. Clark used clay on 0-1 and its nice! From what I have heard I'd use 1080 or 1095 to get the wavey hammond though. 0-1 likes a straight hammond :D

thats it...I'd recomend buying one to be honest. It was a pain to make :D

Email me if you want me to sketch out what I did.......

That Moran vise at Uncle Al's is pretty reasonable. I think I'll opt for buying one in lieu of making my own. If it was a pain for you, Brian, I'd be up a creek :( Thanks, Jeff, for posting this link.

Brian, so you paint the cutting edge with an acetylene torch up (and a little past?) non-magnetic and then quench (in oil)? Do you etch the blade then, and hand rub it?

Many thanks,
Dana

I go from side to side with the torch focusing the heat on the botton 1/3rd then when I reach close to Temperature I start to focus the heat lower.
Grind to 400 grit and etch. Works nice for carbon steels. Quench in 140 to 160 degree oil.

Gene, now that's something I could manage to "build". I'll give that a go as I've got a spare vise and some steel I can use to get close to what you got pictured.

Thanks, Brian, for the information about how you go about achieving those beautiful hamons.
I really like the design of your pieces - simple, but beautiful, lines - fantastic work! It's too bad you're half the country away. I'd pay to have some shop time instruction from you!

Thanks,
Dana

Dana, Uncl al sell's a nice one www.riversidemachine.net/item15834.ctlg.

Jeff

I've got one and I'm not too happy with it. It's not obvious from the tiny picture
on the site, but you can't rotate the knife a full 360 degrees. In the little I've
used it I've frequently wound up where I want to rotate the handle a little more
but it's already at it's limit.
