Recommendation? Who makes the best V-42 Replica Devils Brigade Knife?

Yes, noticed you mentioning. Was the FS though, as you point out.

Both supposed to be excellent IIRC.

On their website I didn’t see that they made a version of the v42. I don’t think they do, maybe they did in the past?

Their stuff is supposed to be quite excellent.

Surgical Stainless  oh Case, you friggin’ guy you...

Technically it is for surgery, isnt it?

That first Spartan pic has been posted in several threads in the last few months, don't know if I can resist much longer...

Looks like I'm gonna have to start stabbing people since I can't buy a knife I don't need / have a purpose for / wouldn't EDC.

Also Spartan Blades is a pretty kick ass company too, of you're into supporting US veteran owned small businesses who excell in their fields and all. Can't remember, are those things all things we like here at BF?

Not if they do them in steel with greater than 13% chromium.

The Spartan V14 may be what you're looking for.

Blues, my reservoir of reasons for not buying one of these is drying up and running dangerously low.

Gonna blow the living hell out of my New Years resolution to avoid impulse knife buys.

But by the time I grab this thing, it will have been a calculated knife buy, I suppose... so all will be well.

Johnny Canuck, if you fear that the Spartan won't hold up to your needs, don't buy it. Really, really simple.

And the Sparan v14 is a Les George collab. It is beautiful, but I lust after the Spartan Ek knife. I have always wanted an Ek knife and failed to get one. Kabar did a special edition Ek bootknife I have equally lusted after. I regret not picking up the Spartan Ek for 500$ canadian when I had the chance.....
Also I actually really really think that Extrema Ratio Supressor. It is so sexy to me. Or how about the old school Masters of Defense mk 5. My buddy double edged his.

Kabar/Jarosz/Ek bootknife. Sometimes I look at pictures of this and cry myself to sleep.

Extrema Ratio Supressor. I know I posted this earlier but one more sexy picture won’t hurt.

Extrema Ratio Commando Daggers. They make some sweet daggers. Often terrible sheaths though, this one looks good.

I'll give you one good reason to buy the Spartan V14...

Zombie apocalypse.

Pretty sure that green beret breakage was found to be due to manipulation with liquid nitrogen. Note that Noss and his website are long gone and he was known to be a fan of knife makers that lost the competition to the Green Beret.

The Adra would be one of the few daggers I would be cautious about: I know they are not meant for throwing, but the buttcap construction is odd:

Gaston

By the way, the RAO this tester also tested (in another video) was a real one, not a copy. I confirmed it to my satisfaction from details on the handle compared to the known copies. This guy is quite reasonable in his tests, and he really saved me hundreds.

Hi, the Spartan is stainless, therefore, lacks lateral strength, so I would not be interested in it. Should be carbon.

Thank you,

JC :)
Carbon steel lacks the lateral strength of titanium. We're talking minutia as far a dagger goes. Modern stainless is just fine, though I do perfer carbon mostly for sharpenability

You were actually considering an Extrema Ratio product, even as a knife enthusiast? Weird.

I like some of their stuff. Just some of the sheaths they put out are terrible.

M1a1 and Dark Talon folders. That dark talon is beyond badass. It is like a modern stilleto. (Not in form but in function)

Hello fellows,

Thanks for participating! Since I have several of you here, may I broaden my question as follows:

Which dagger would you acquire for purposes of self-defence?

Thank you,

JC :)

Short answer: I wouldn't recommend a blade as a primary means of defense.

Thats a question better suited for practical tactical

That statement is totally untrue. We have something today called modern steel. It was only in the now fairly distant past that stainless blades did not make durable blades.

Infact I wouldn’t be surprised if those modern stainless daggers are way more laterally durable than the original v42. (Notorious for it’s weak point)

Most the modern replicas of the v42 and ww2 daggers are poorly made and display pieces first. The best ww2 dagger replica being made is IMHO probably the Hill Knives Fairbairn Sykes replicas. These are truly ready for the battlefield.

Lapedog, do you own one of those Hill Knives Commando Daggers? Like many on this thread regarding the Spartan V14 dagger, I have been resisting the urge to purchase one of the Hill Knives daggers. I am just curious to know how the purchase went? I have never purchased a knife from across the pond before and am not sure if the transaction is smooth and the same as any other purchase. Any ideas on lead times with those folks? They appear to all be handmade. Thanks for the help either way!

If you want a V-42 replica, The Case version from a year or two back is the one to get. They run around $400, but are better made than the CAS Hanwei version. The Boker version is well made enough but the dimensions aren't true to the original (handle is shorter, for starters). I haven't handled the Windlass version but based on the quality of their Fairbairn Sykes repro, I'd pick it over the cheap Colt/ United Cutlery versions. If you just want a combat dagger, that's a different question.

The Fox Bellum & Extrema Ratio Suppressor have obvious V-42 DNA in their designs & are much better made. You'll have a hard time getting an edge on either due to the thick edge geometry, if that matters. The original V-42s have thick edges & don't cut well, either, & are much more delicate. The out of production Ontario SP3 has the V-42 handle shape, complete with witch's hat pommel, with a kraton grip instead of leather & an M3 trench knife blade.

And that Spartan V-14 is tougher than any V-42, even if you were to whip one up in 3V or whatever. The geometry trumps the hypothetical property of the steel involved by a long shot here. The V-14 is thick, full tang, & the blade has a stronger geometry than the thin, delicate V-42 blades.

Best dagger for self defense?

IMHO I think a Benchmade Socp or Spartan CQB tool. They are certainly not the deadliest daggers. In urban environments we often want something low profile.

That is for me though. They are small daggers for getting an attacker off you. Once I get the attacker off I am running if possible.

Sadly I do not own that dagger nor any Hill knives. I had heard that they were excellent quality though and so they are the company I thought of when suggesting a replica ww2 dagger.

I have only heard good things about them and they seem to be a reputable company. I would suggest you email them and they can answer any questions you might have.

Considering that I have heard their quality is comparable to many of the best knife makers putting out fixed blades I would say if you are interested take the plunge. I suggest watching youtube videos or finding reviews to see if there are any well known issues. (I haven’t heard of any). Still I can’t in good concious give a Lapedog seal of approval to a knife I have never owned let alone handled.

If you do get one be sure to let us all know. I would love to hear more about Hill knives.

Edit:

Just adding photos

I have the Hill Knives dagger. I can't remember the lead time or other details, but the purchase went without incident. It's a nice, solidly built knife. The perfectly round handle makes edge orientation less intuitive, but it's light, feels nice in hand, & is well worth the cost. Fox was recently licensed to make this design. I haven't handled their version yet, but I'm sure it's well done.
