Who makes the sharpest?

Let me back up a bit. In searching for the really sharp edge, I've bought blades made of damascus, 440-C, ATS-34, 154 CM, BG-42, 10XX, 5XXX, Aus-8, D2, and Cowry-X. I've bought blades made of stellite, talonite, Boye's dendritic cobalt, ceramic, obsidian, and even one with a tiny diamond blade.

After all that, the best money I've spent purely on sharpness, the best bang-for-the-buck on sharpness, has been an EdgePro Professional model from Ben Dale.

If you want great sharpness, it is a problem you have to solve, it's not something that the knife maker can solve for you, certainly not after the first time you use the edge they've sent you.

If you really want sharp, and you want to keep things sharp, you have to roll up your sleeves and do it yourself.

Ditto what Gaben just posted, you need to KNOW how to maintain and in some cases as you found out, put an initial edge on your knife.

And to back up Win Heger, Check out about any FIKES knife to feel sharp I've had several of his knives at the house and they took an incredible edge! What I call Tree Top trimming type edge, where as you say, cut a free standing hair. Recently the Alan Folts 1090 fixed blade I owned would take such an edge, man did that get sharp! I would give the nod to more of the high carbon blades verses stainless ones, they just seem to take a keener edge for the show offness of shaving hair off.
The Cobalt blades by David Boye offer a different degree of sharpness, with the micro cutting type edge, it was one type of blade that you could saw cut through a Q-Tip where even a really sharp knife would glide across, very sharp knife!

I use a Norton Tri-Hone setup to put initial bevels on and then onto some ceramics and finally a strop.

Sharp is Great, all should take the time to learn! I highly recommend using the Spyderco Profiles for those touch ups at work.

And remember, we Americans have a consitutional right to Bare Arms...;)

Ditto Jose! I bought a Kirk Rexroat "Laramie" knife at the Reno ABS Show.I was more than impressed. it gets better each time i look at it and experience the action. Smoooooth! As smooth as any i have opened. I was fortunate enough to buy Koji Haras "Best of Show " knife at the Las Vegas Classic in 2002. It too is very sharp ,Cowry X i believe, and has a great action.I WILL buy more of these guys knives.

Neil Blackwood knives are wicked sharp....the few of his folders I have seen are capable. I know the Henchman cut allot of leather ;) and has cut allot more since then...and is still shaving sharp.
Henchman aint a folder but I have no doubt his folders are as sharp.

Just my opinion.

Kamkazmoto,
In response to your question about other makers like Smith, Obernauf, Mayo,Kit Carson, etc. I did not intend to leave out anyone. I only spoke of the makers whose knives I have purchased and therefore handled extensively.
Since the main time I can handle another maker's knives is at knife shows, and since I have to man my table, most of the time I'm there, too many of the makers you mentioned, and I mentioned, for that matter, sell out before I get a chance to get to their table.
It can be frustrating to be a maker at a knife show and also be a collector, but a fun frustration....like the kid in the candy store, but the kid has to spend time behind the counter. But by the same token, it is a real kick to talk with collectors and clients.

I think most of us understand how to sharpen but the question was who put out the sharpest from their shop . Personaly , if I get a dull knife from a maker they will either pay the shipping for it to go back and be done RIGHT or it will go back for a full refund .

I don't spend HUNDREDS of dollars to receive a knife I have to work on as soon as I get it unwrapped !!! I may be in the minority here but that is my .02 worth . Would you buy a car with the door loose and say well that is my problem , I'll just fix the makers poorly done product myself. I think not !! It is the makers JOB to send out a sharp knife and yes razor sharp is the standard .

And yes edge geometry is the makers place to . A five dollar knife can be razor sharp but not cut because of a poorly angled edge and most important , how long will it hold that edge . I have put my Burke Pronghorn thru hell , it has been thru the side of my truck, cut wire fence and everything in between . I have sharpened it on a stone ( bench) a field rock , and a concrete slap in an emergency . It will get sharp quick and stay that way . That is how I measure a knife , all mine are workers not case queens .
