This is a very old thread, but yes, we can blame the consumer for demanding cheap stuff and the importers who gleefully fulfill that role. As a side note, someone mentioned that Buck might be headed for corporate take down by some conglomerate and had me concerned, until I noticed the date (2006). Buck is still very much here.
 
Miroku was been making Winchester (and Browning and Weatherby) rifles long before 2006.

I am actually more likely to buy a pocket knife (or really, anything for the matter) from a large conglomerate than a small business.

Not knocking small businesses or anything, but unless that small business has shown both product stability and profitability for about a decade, the odds are that your 5th-favourite product from the large corporation is more likely to stay on the market for the forseeable future than your favourite product from that small business that reports huge financial swings every quarter.
