Who opens their slippie goofy-handed

I open my pocket knives holding the handle in my right hand, using my left thumb and forefinger. If the nail nick is on the mark side I open it with the edge down. If the nick is on the pile side, I open it edge up. Seems to work well enough for me. Why switch hands to open then use?

I never gave it much thought but I'm another righty who holds the knife in my right hand and use my left thumb nail to open the knife. Then of course I close the blade by holding the knife in my right hand and pressing the spine of the blade against my leg.

I've always done it as the OP does, and I'm a righty. However, I've got some weird right/left issues myself, what with holding a hockey stick lefty, yet a golf club righty. I write, shoot, and play guitar/bass/banjo right-handed, and have no problem doing two different, semi-complex things with each hand at the same time (used to be a short-order cook, a loooong time ago). FWIW, I keep my knife in my left front pocket.

I've heard about the "cross dominance" thing (right handed, but left eye dominate), but luckily I don't seem to suffer from that.

I am (extremely) right handed but I hold a slippie in my left hand (left front pocket too) and open with my right thumb, except for the pen blade on a Jacknife when the nicks are on opposite sides. I open those with the knife in my right hand, and use my middle fingernail in the nick.
I don't feel comfortable using my left thumb in the nick, but I can pinch them open with my left thumb and forefinger if the blade will allow it.
Come to think of it, I sometimes will hold right handed and use my left thumb to open the Spey blade on a trapper where the nick is all the way at the end of the blade.:(

I never really thought about all that before, but I am sure I will be next time I open mine. Surely I will soon add another scar to the collection trying all the various methods listed here in a futile attempt to find a "better" way to open a dang pocket knife. Thanks allot!;)

OMG..I just realized I can open any blade while holding the handle with my right hand, whether the nick is on the pile side or mark side. I love my opposing thumbs. :D

You've got a tooth? Nobody likes a braggart.

LOL nah! :) I wasn't braggin, just being silly. I actually open mine with my left thumbnail, while holding it in my right hand.

Being wrong handed (lefty) I have to open a slip-joint with the goofy-hand method. I can attest that it ain't entirely safe, unless I can talk the maker into cutting a nail nick on the opposite side....

I don't know, the idea of jugling my knife back and forth from one hand to the other in order to open it seems odd.

I carry my knife in my right (strong side) front pocket. Pull it out with my right hand, hold it in my right hand while opening the blade with my left thumb and forefinger, and they proceed to use it with my right hand. When I close it I follow exactly the opposite procedure, using my left hand to close the blade while holding the knife with my right.

Works for me!

I'm a righty and execute both the goofy and normal opening method (the latter is. . . .knife in right hand, open blade with left). Just not at the same time and depends on the day of the week. :D

Being the goof ball that I am, I noticed I used both methods today at different times.

I'm a righty and hold the knife in the right hand, opening with the left.

The only knife I recall opening the other way is one that has a spring like a bear trap. I use my stronger hand to wrestle that one open.

Seeing as how my "go-to" knife is a one hander clipped in right front I open slippys by holding in left hand and using right thumb and first finger.

Yes, I have to change over to right. But I've done it for YEARS with no problems.

On those FEW knives that allow it I'll grip the blade with right fingers and use left to swivel body.

Right handed. I hold knife in right hand, pull open with left thumbnail. Never thought about it, but I could tell I have always done it like that. When I tried it the other way around I found out my right thumb is not as strong, at least for opening a pocket knife.

Hi,

As another one of those sinister people, I use either hand without preference. I guess because I tend to have a fair degree of ambidexterity. Most likely learned from living in a right handed world.
