Who or What got you started?

I'd say I was always fascinated by blades, my dad has a decent collection of old slippies and a nice buck that were his father's before him. My parents giving me a Buck 110 when I was about I'd say 11 years old maybe a bit older definitely started me into appreciating high quality knives.

I wish that I still had that old Kamp King and first SAK (like an Angler). It would be nice to see pictures for those who still have those first knives...

So because of my aunt giving me a SAK at age 8 it leads to this sort of interest:

Buck 110 given to me by my dad about ten years ago. I started catching more fish than he did so he started making me clean them all!

I started getting more into knives as I became more knowledgeable about them almost a year ago thanks to this forum, which has led me since to purchase a Mora, Buck Vantage pro, and Kershaw Leek. Now I'm lusting for a Spydie

I ahve no idea what got me started loving knives, but I started really buying them when i moved away from home and began making my own money. My first real knife was a benchmade griptillian my brother gave me. I'm kinda glad my mom never bought me any of the shitty knive i begged her for when i saw them on the tv shopping channels. I would have destroyed them in 5 minutes flat. Now they are all i spend my money on... well and Jameson :D

Like many others here, my Dad bought me my first "real" knife -- a Schrade 3-blade Old Timer stockman. I whittled with it for a few days, sliced myself a time or two, and probably within the first month I broke the tip off the clip point. I thought it looked ugly and didn't want to carry it anymore. It would be years before I started to appreciate knives in any serious way.

In 2003, I started working as a chainman for a survey company. I bought all the gear I thought I'd need for the job, and dug right in, training with a few different crews until I got the hang of things. One of the crews I worked with had a guy who was really big on knives. He had a Kershaw Leek and a Spyderco Delica, and for whatever reason, they immediately struck a chord with me. I knew I had to have a good knife for myself. Not long after, I went with my wife to the mall to see what was on offer at the knife shop. Somehow, I allowed myself to be talked out of a Spyderco and into a CRKT M16, tanto blade. For what I was doing, it was a stupid choice, and the guy totally fleeced me on the price, but I was green and it looked "cool".

I decided I needed more knives, went online and found BladeForums, and a few other forums of its ilk. That did it for me. I've been buying and carrying knives ever since. Not a day goes by that I don't carry or use at least one knife, and there's pretty much never a time that I don't have one within reach. Interestingly enough, the guy who got me hooked on them to begin with turned out to be what we would all consider a casual knife enthusiast; he knows what brands are good, but his interest ends there. I ended up surpassing him in pretty much every facet of the hobby and eventually began to teach him a few things about them!

Hunting as a kid - I grew up in Baltimore City so any chance I got to go into the woods was a treat. It was a chance to have a Puma skinner on my belt and a slip joint in my pocket.

I remember sitting in many a tree stand whittling.

I used to be into guns, but once the wife / kids came and the laws started to get more restrictive, my energy went into knives.

I am pretty sure it's my dad's fault. He’s carried a traditional slipjoint in his pocket as long as I can remember. Then towards the end of college I started spending more time outdoors which added to it. But I didn’t really start spending money on better knives till recently. That probably has to do with not having money for good knives in college though :).

I have always carried a pocket knife. For the past few years it has been a puma. Not too long ago the blade was getting pretty dull so I started looking into what other people were carrying. I wanted something affordable, slim and fairly concealable and my choices came down to the Kershaw Leek and SOG Twitch 2. I decided on the Leek and soon after I received my first one, I ended up with 40 more ;)

Not sure when it began for me. The men in my family are all knife nuts. There were always knives around. First knife I can remember carrying was a Victorinox Tinker. Started carrying it again yesterday. Brings back good memories.

My first quality knife would be the Victorinox Officers model (basic 9 feature).....but in contrast the person responsible would
be "John Rambo"...the irony is in the size of the blades!!:)

I've always had a fascination with knives, but I did not know of "quality" blades until I came across CutleryLover's YouTube channel.

My first knife was a Frost slipjoint that I found in a McDonalds ball pit [closed thankfully] when I was seven or eight years old.

Given my user name, I was into Zippos and Zippo tricks prior to knives.
Upon search of Zippo tricks I found CutleryLover's channel and the rest is history.
