Who played knife games as a kid?

Man, I had to wait until I was an adult before I got to play with knives :D. Count me in the camp who had knives as a kid, was surrounded by knives and guns, but the idea of playing with either would have been so frowned upon that honestly the thought never even crossed my mind. In fact, I've never even heard of mumbly peg until this thread. Alot of the games we played instead if we were bored outside involved gambling, like throwing quarters to the line. I was a champ at that one.

We played mumbledy peg and stretch all the time, threw our knives into boards and trees, whittled every day.

One of my friends clipped a toe with a knock off KaBar. I was going for a drop from somewhere on my head playing mumbledy peg and stuck the knife all the way through my foot. Still have the scar.

Wouldn’t trade my childhood for the world. We grew up as boys should, and were a tough, self reliant bunch.

Like AntDog, played mumbley peg in school yard in 5th grade. No one, even teachers, thought anything about it. Now you would get expelled and arrested. :-(

We played "dodge the knife that just bounced off of the tree". Basically you'd wing the knife (fixed blade) at a tree trunk as hard as you can hoping it would stick. It generally didn't, prompting a change in the rules to just "heads up!"

Don't play that game.

Ha! Thanks for the warning! :)

Mom was overprotective with me, so I didn't get my first knife til I was about 13ish when my brother secretly gave me my first one.

But.., little did she know we used to have all kinds of weapons to our desposal that we hid very well. My oldest brother is 10 years older then me, so when I was let's say 8 he was 18, and had brought home all kinds of stuff, mostly Cold Steel products. I remember the shovel, bad axe, Chinese broad sword, torpedo, and I think it was a African bull whip.

Mostly we would have throwing competitions with them. And we had a yearly tradition in November to destroy our Jack o lanterns with the whip. Good times, good times.

We painted targets and pics of people on cardboard boxes and threw throwing stars, knives, and other shiny pointy objects at them. I killed several thousand ninjas and other assorted bad guys.

I also always completed my mission in time for lunch or dinner.

Did anyone have rock fights as a kid where you got into opposing groups and literally threw rocks at each other.

To prove how brave we were you could elect to stand defenceless and motionless in the open at a set distance while the enemy had free shots, every shot they miss you win and every shot they get and you don't move you "win" as well.

I said it was to prove your bravery not your smarts.

We played "Stretch". You face an opponent and take turns throwing a fixed blade laterally. If it stuck
In the ground, your opponent had to stretch his foot out to that point. The best knife thrower and the most flexible
People always won.
I was going to say mumbly peg (we actually called it “jacknife”, but I remember this game of “stretch as well. Although we played it with a jacknife.
