I've been making a few scandi stick tang blade knives.I would however like to try some different styles if I can find some good blades.

Is around $40 and possible under an unreasonable price to expect to pay for a good carbon steel stick tang with about a 4" blade?

I have looked at Jantz and Texas Knife supply but all I find are stainless.

This knife making is hard work but very addictive.

Try RagWeed Forge. They sell various Mora-type blades in several different steels. Even if they don't have unfinished blades in stock, the finished knives are inexpensive enough that you could buy one, rehandle it, and probably still be under $40.I haven't bought from them but the boys in W&SS say good things about their service.

EDIT: I just realized you're looking to branch out from the scandi styles... one way to go would be to get a couple Old Hickory kitchen/butcher knives and regrind them to the profile you desire. There's a current thread about them here. They're good- quality 1095 carbon steel. Be aware they're tempered kind of soft; this hurts edge-retention but they're very easy to sharpen. They're very affordable and would make a good project. You could make a stick-tang out of them as long as you leave some steel on either side of the holes drilled in the full tang.
