Just got back from a trip to Tokyo. I noticed what looked like some nice handmade fixed blade knives in one store...don't know who made them and didn't have a translator to read the characters etched on the blade. However, a sign was displayed something to the effect of no sword or knife sales to foreigners so I couldn't purchase one. I've searched on the web for Japanese knives but can only find kitchen cutlery, super-expensive custom blades from master smiths, and Hattoris. Does anyone know of any source for a wider selection of Japanese knives? I'm looking in the $150-$300 range.

www.knifecenter.com Kanetsune brand white steel, and super blue steel knives. Both carbon steels from neck knife size to near machete size. I love the super blue as it is a carbon/tungsten alloy RC'ed at almost 64. Real good stuff taking an edge, and holding it. The "White" steel is kind of a cleaner, higher carbon 1095. Both from Hitachi. Seki cut also has some fixed blades in VG10. Joe
Wierd. I found a couple shops when I was there a few months ago and bought 3 knives. Must have been just the local shop.
I'm going to be in Yokohama in 2 weeks. Gonna have to see what I can find.
But as has been posted japaneseknifedirect is a good place.
