  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Who Taught or Inspired You?

My Dad was an 'outdoors' guy. Hunting, fishing, boating and camping. My real mentor though was a buddy of his, a retired Methodist Minister.
He was 'bout as savy an outdoorsman as you will ever find. He taught me how to make fires, to fish, to hunt, and to live well, far from the maddening crowd.
Rev. Lee has been dead for many years, and I lost my Dad back in 1991. The two best guys I ever knew.

My Dad was first, but after he passed away when I was 9, my grandfather (technically step-grandfather, but you would never know it from how he treated me).

He was just one of those simple country men, that hunting and fishing were not "outdoor sports", but just what you did, because he had grown up doing it to put food on the table.

My father taught me as well. Raised in Oregon, we had plenty of adventures in the wilderness of the pacific northwest and surrounding mountains.

I am very thankful of his influence on me and he knows it:thumbup:.

I was self inspired until Mr. Jacobson, he was my 8th grade Outdoor Adventure teacher.
He's the one responsible for getting me hooked on canoeing and canoe camping.

Now, the question is. Who (or what) Taught or INSPIRED you? Aside from my original post, I find consistent inspiration on this forum. I thank ALL of you who participate and share a part of yourselves so that others may benefit. I hope I can return the favor.

This is me, I didn't have anybody.....This is were I come to be taught and inspired, everybody in W&SS.......

I was very lucky to land in a decent Boy Scout troop back in the early 60's. We had a bunch of adult leaders who knew and could teach the basics. The older I get the more I appreciate them.

My Mother tought me only the most basic camping skills, but she taught me the survival mindset more than anyone else I can think of.

She always seemed prepared for anything, nothing shook her or knocked her down, a single mother raising 3 boys and working full time as a Labor and delivery nurse, she could handle alot of things. She smiled when others would break down, and stayed calm when others were loosing their heads.

At the age of 55 my mother and a friend were on a bus tour in the costa-rican rain forest when the bus broke down. My mother passed out hard candy from her bag to hot, hungry passengers and lead them in a sing along to keep them calm until help arrived.

She inspired and still inspires and encourages a passion for the outdoors and an appreciation of nature into all 3 of her sons that we still enjoy today.
