Who the hell is Helle Knives?

I got my first one in 1947 ! I start early and I've been knifing ever since.

Helle knives are better finished and made with nicer materials than other less-expensive Scandinavian brands, justifying the price difference.

If that's what you're into, more power to you. I'm not going to try to talk anyone out of a Helle, but I want a significant performance advantage if I pay a premium and I'm not seeing where I would get it by paying for the Helle.

Welcome to the world of knives!
Helle > mora
"the law of diminishing returns"
$100-$200 is not exactly a premium knife price.
Also comparing to moras is almost unfair because they are so devilishly cheap.

Here's a picture of my Helle's. I've had them for several years now. They have worked very well for me, camping and field dressing whitetail deer. They held their edge very well, aren't overly hard to sharpen and are aesthetically pleasing to my eye. Your Helle is a great gift!

So you would never buy a Benchmade or Spyderco then, because a less expensive Opinel cuts just as well? No worries, I too carry an Opinel. :)

The fact is that if a knife maker uses better/more expensive materials and spends a lot more time on fitting, polishing, and QC, their knife is almost certain to cost more.

Thanks for posting the video It shows the craftsmanship and skill that goes into these excellent knives.

Nope, I'll happily pay for better edge retention, corrosion resistance, convenient access, lock strength, durability, etc. All of those can be significant performance advantages. Not seeing how Helle provides any of that.

Heck, sometimes I absolutely WILL pay a bit more for aesthetics. I plan to pick up a Benchmade Crooked River because I love the way it looks. But I'm not going to tell myself that I'm ending up with a better knife than my Manix 2 XL. Just a better looking one.

Unfair or not, it's the comparison you're gonna get. And Helle certainly makes much nicer knives than Mora, but my end question is do they make better knives? I simply don't see any real evidence of that.

I have a Harding and a Fjellkniven, and I like them! Very light and capable (never batoned with them, though), and good looking as well. I somehow don't have any recent pics... I'll work on that tomorrow (if the weather cooperates!).

Thanks Derek,

I like this one. It disappears on my belt. Does what I need it to do. Low maintenance blade,

And I take great comfort in the Nordic way of waxing the handle.
Once a day for a week,
Once a week for a month,
Once a month for a year,
Once a year for the rest of your life,

The leather sheath is simple, but well thought out. It has a nice snug fit, so even without the retainer strap on top. The knife stays where it belongs. That's nice if you're messing about in camp. It has a plastic insert on the bottom half. To prevent the sharp point from accidentally finding its way through. And it doesn't rattle. I hate sheaths that rattle.

What LV says about the Harding.. It ROCKS!! John :thumbup:

Couldn't find my Harding last night (great blade - I think it's in one of my dedicated bug-out or bushcraft bags), so I broke out my Fjellkniven - it hasn't been out of the safe in a while. Great light to medium duty fixed blade option.
