Who turned you into a knife lover?

When I was watching the Bear Grylls seasons again, I started paying attention to the knives he had in the first 3 seasons and I was interested.

My father. He was the 3rd generation to run the George Schrade Knife Co. Knives were everywhere in his house. Most of them were Switchblades. Back in the 50's you had a knife in your pocket before you had a house key.

my dad. he carried a buck 110 for as long as I can remember. up until I got him a spyderco native:D

I got this Cub Scout knife when I was about 7 (40 years ago). I remember going to the store a getting it along with the rest of my uniform. Funny that back in those days, us kids were expected to wear your uniform to school on troop meeting days and carrying ones knife to school was expected. The Scouts didn't end up being for me, but I've carried a pocket knife every day since then. I also have great memories of setting with my grandfather and watching while he sharpened my pocket knife for me. I can also remember on more than one occasion, when my grandpa made it to Church only to realize that he had forgotten to shave that morning, so while seating in the car he would pull out his pocket knife and shave dry while using the rear view mirror before we went inside. We also cleaned a lot of fish and game together with our pocket knives, so I guess it was he that turned me into a knife lover.

Thanks Papa!

Those were the good old days of Americas past when a kid could take his pocket knife to school and not end up expelled or on the No Fly List.

Like many others, the seed was planted with my father. He grew up in the woods, so knives for him really were survival tools, just like the rifle he used at age 8 to hunt small game.

I have always liked knives growing up but my friend in school really got me into them and bladeforums has continued it also

I'm pretty sure I was born with the bug. Can't remember ever not having a knife. I've always been drawn to tools, whether they cut or not. There are lots of engineers, builders and craftsmen in my bloodline... a lot of politicians, too.:barf:
Funny thing - One of my old employers (a craftsman) had a boy. Before he even made it to six months old he would always opt for a tool, specifically a knife, when given a choice.
Candy or shiny knife? - He'd pick the knife.
Candy or rusty, ugly knife? - Knife.
Barbie or candy? - Candy.
G.I. Joe or candy? - Candy.
His favorite stuffed animal or knife? - Knife.
Power planer or knife? - Knife.
Drill motor or knife? - Knife.

I think either you got the bug or you don't.

My Dad did. He always carries a small Boker electricians Folder. It's from the 50's or something. Carbon steel blades, beat up but still takes a beautiful edge. I used to 'poo-paa' the 'ugly' patina. Now I love carbon steel!

I don't think it is necessary for anybody to turn us into knife lovers. I think we are programmed that way, we just have to find them.

The guys that don't like knives, well they aren't men the way that we are.

My grandpa got me hooked when I was around 8 with a SAK. Then he gave me a Buck 303 when I was around 9. It was love at first slice.

My mom got me hooked. She taught me how to cook so I could take care of myself, and she always impressed upon me the important of having a sharp knife at hand, in the house and out. My dad always had an SAK or a Buck 110 in his pocket, so I guess I just grew up with them.

I don't have a specific person but i have always love shard objects but knives and guns werent encouraged in my house but my grandpa on my moms side had more guns and knives i could count. I think it started when i was a kid and wanting to be a ninja so i got enrolled in self defense classes but as i got older i got in to weapons like swords, ninja stars, ect. then once i got over the "ninja" stage i got into self defense knife fighting and started buying cheap 5$ knives when i was 8-12 and carried knives ever since. Then i got in to camping, hunting, ect. and i quickly learned that cheap knives are not going to "cut it" any more so I started watching knife reviews so i could learn all i could about knives and it eventually led me here now i have 3 knives on the way and plan on getting alot more.

So i guess my grandpa and nature got me into quality knives

No one. However, a couple of years ago a friend of mine asked if I wanted to go buy a knife at a knife store in another town. That rekindled my interest and got me started in more high end knives.

That got me to realizing that there were tools with which one could manipulate the environment and, in so doing, give partial relief to one's inner turmoil.

I love that line. If life is kicking them around, a man will buy a knife, a woman, shoes.

Startin' to really kind of like your stuff Powernoodle.

Anywayz, you all made me love knives. You're all guilty, every last one of you.

Well, anyway, yeah I've loved knives since I was a boy but I didn't have this many till I came here.
