who uses a tarp as a tent?

So anyway, tarp setup isn't rocket science. It is sorta like oragami, in fact, trying different tarp ideas with a sheet of folded paper is good practice. Site selection is important to keep water from pooling under a tarp when it rains, and to keep wind from turning your tarp into a kite.

do u use a tarp? i have a condor 2 , first aid kit, a spyderco full delica, msr pocket rocket, what eslse would i need do u think?

DK,

What kind of climate/location are we talking here? The Condor may be good for milder temps due to it's relative small capacity, but you need some kit to enjoy winter camping in cold weather.

If in cold weather, you need to get off the warmth-grabbing ground. The easiest is to get a closed-cell pad and, ideally, an inflatable downpad on top of that. But that is a luxury :)

Open Country makes good aluminum pot for your rocket. They're cheap and can be found at Campmor, REI. etc.

That Delica won't handle any serious woodcraft, especially if you have to baton to access dry wood. Get a decent fixed blade. This is the best forum for determining that

Sleeping bag was already mentioned. Get a good one if going out in the cold. Probably rated for 10 degrees warmer than your expected low temps.

Also get a good compass and topo map of your camping area and practice. Brian Andrews has posted some very good vids for your reference. I can't remember where they are posted.

Bic lighters and a good firesteel backup.

I've been looking at the tarps at bensbackwoods.com. He has some great kit there.

Be safe.

You'll need a blanket/sleping bag for Spring, Fall, and Winter, and maybe even Summer depending on where you are. Compasses are useful. As was already mentioned, you'll need matches, a lighter, firestarter, etc. A hatchet is a good thing for getting firewood. It's a bad idea to go hiking without a few extra pairs of socks and comfortable shoes. You should also keep cord or rope of some type in your pack. A bag for your food for when in bear country so you can tie it up.

I use a tarp for most all summer trips, I don't like to be cramped up in a backpacking tent, although they are nice for the bugs. Here is mine set up, it is a 10x10 campmor. Chris

He was a troll? I was just getting geared up to do an equipment post. I must be clueless!

He had ben banned multiple times before and keeps coming back under different names. Post your basic equipment list anyway Beef. Maybe even start a new thread with it if you wish. I'd like to see it.

...Who was it that said, "Youth is wasted on the young" ? :D

The older I get, the more young folks it seems are "wasted". I guess my parents said the same thing about me in 1969. But I did stay off the innernetz back then. :p

i once had to spend a week under a tarp because some retard forget the tents(camping with scout troop)

One time, our scout troop went hiking without a map and our leaders marched the rest of the troop through a swamp (taking a shortcut). Meanwhile four or five of us fell behind and stayed on the trail, we got back to the campsite before them, and a lot less miserable. :D
