I snowshoe for exercise during the winter and I wear OR Verglas gators over my Merrell Hiking Boots to keep the snow out.

I've tried them, but never use them - makes me feel too "geared up". Like I'm going skiing or something. Although I have been thinking about getting some shorter ones for snakes since the areas of KY I hike are so full of copperheads and even some rattlers I believe.

I wear some of these Inov8 sock gaiters at work to keep gravel, mulch, grass seeds and the like out of my boots and shoes.

They have their place!
Out west our snow can get over your hips during freak fall and spring storms, rendering gators not very usefull.
For snakes I can certainly see the benift. I have a set of snakeproof chaps for use on the plains during the summer
