Maybe we could leverage our mass buying power on a regular basis. After this effort, we could go on to Erikson and Turnbull, maybe even Fred Perrin.

For me.
1. Deep Belly Bowie
2. Bowie Clip
3. Weehawk

Any blade designs of your own?

What, nobody likes the Mariner? You know, I think I've seen all of Benchmade's custom profiles except the Mariner. I don't know if they ever even did one.

I find the deep-belly bowie top-heavy and thus slow and difficult to manipulate.

Blade profiles with a lot of weight foreward are always that way. Jody Samson didn't prefer the Weehawk and Jeff Imada didn't lend his name to the high hollow for no reason. These are fast blades to manipulate.

Keep in mind that we are working with a very creative maker here who has a lot of ideas of his own and probably will want to think outside of Benchmade's old catalog.

Now, here's a bit of an update. Our maker has not committed fully just yet, but is impressed with the enthusiastic response this thread has received and I'm pretty sure this project will go ahead. What this means is that over the next three our four months, Clay and I will be working with this maker on the design. We'll trade sketches, test prototypes, etc. Along the way, we may post a few tid bits for everyone to look at. Then, we'll unveil the finalized design and all of the available custom options and ask for orders.

I know this may seem like a bit of a closed thing. I know that all of you have ideas. I'd like to thank those of you who have shared theirs with me here and via e-mail. I have summarized them and sent them off to our maker and will continue to do so. I just hope that all of you can understand that it's NOT That we don't want you involved and don't value your ideas and opinions. It's just that our maker is a busy man and he wants to spend his time designing and making knives, and that's where we want him too.

The finished design will be a compromise, they always are. It will also be a unique expression of our maker's own creative and artistic muse. It probably won't be exactly to your liking nor will it be exactly to my liking. But, I can assure you that it will be a great design and certainly well within my liking and, I hope, well within yours too. The knife will be both artistic and functional in the unique way that balisongs are functional. There'll be a variety of options to customize your knife as either a fighter, a utility user, or as a collection piece. Each individual piece will be hand made by our custom maker in his shop. While there will be a common basic design, each piece will be very custom for its owner. And, since we're doing it as a small batch project, the price will be significantly less than you'd expect to pay a custom maker for a one-up balisong.

I'm very excited about this project and very pleased at your enthusiastic response.

Please keep your ideas and opinions flowing.

Given the list shown, I'd ask for the Imada High Hollow simply because I've got lots of Weehawks.

I suppose if I used the old cliche` "Meet your Maker", no one would grin?

as a sidebar, I know that balis are illegal to **** tosome states. what about a DIY kit (do it yerself) I myself would love to make a bali.only problem is I cant find blades short ofwrecking my $10 taiwanese junk knives and even then I would prefer a better piece of stock.
Is there a place to buy handle frames and blades etc?

Nate

Imada High Hollow, Scimitar, and the Bowie; I'm torn on the first two- that scimitar is so neat and I've only seen one!

Chuck - I have seen one 'mariner' style or sheepsfoot if you prefer - it was a long time ago, made under the Bali-Song name and carried by an employee of the company (in a sheath strapped to his wrist covered by the sleeve of an oversized wool knit sweater). Stainless steel handle w/micarta inlay (either dark brown or maroon....been a while). The grind on his blade was best described as a 'high hollow' grind. I really liked that knife!

Imada high hollow, scimitar, and then kris. Interesting blade shapes tend to catch and hold my attention.

Chuck,

I could go for the Imada High Hollow.

I'm definately interested. And would love to see something other than a weehawk or tanto. I'd love it if someone would put a nice recurve in a bali w/out going overboard like the deep belly bowie.
Troy

I'm a bad boy for doing this, but the maker in question says he is still very much in the air about what the final blade shape will be, but is thinking along the lines of a recurve.

I personally think recurve is good, a sharp 50% false edge is good too. Don't like anything geometric, bluchh!

Steve, recurve is good.

Maybe like the BM 710, High Hollowed, 50% sharpened top and Mirror Polished.

Now what blade length; 4, 4.5 or 5 inch?

I'm getting the feeling weehawk and Tanto blades are out.

The maker wants to do something different from the standard weehawk, and an interest in the recurve was mentioned, that's all I know.
My personal preference would be for a 5" blade. I really like the way the bigger knives swing. But it is all TBD at this point as far as I know.
