There has been interest in this 10 inch "new model" and also a 14 inch version.

Who wants what? Sign up time so I'll know how many to order.

Figure $100 for 10 inch and $125 for 14 inch.

Me, me... 14"

Prepay or wait and pay in a little while?

Will it have the habaki thing and a buttplate?
Chiruwa or rat tail?

Steel or brass?
Wood or horn?

Uncle, please put me on the list for a 10" model. Check for pre-pay on it's way soon as I can.

I imagine it will probably have the exact same features as the one in the pictures above.

Short brass bolster
No buttplate
Chiruwa
Horn handle

Which is ok with me. Better to not change it, IMHO.

I'd prefer a habaki thing just because how I generally hold the blade. Not a huge deal though.

Before I say "yes, a 10-incher" could someone who's handled it (or is better at judging from pictures than I) give me an idea as to the length of the handle, please?
I have a bunch of chopping-size khuks, so a smaller knife would be nice if my hand won't be overlapping the blade.

t1mpani,

That is precisely the reason for a 14 incher.

Judging from the photograph, if it is a 10 inch knife (Uncle measures straight from the farthest part of the butt to the tip) then the handle is approximately 3.75" - including bolster. For some folks, that is plenty. From my personal experience, I need at least 4.5" to feel comfortable (from front of bolster to butt).

Extrapolating, I found that a scaled up version of this at least 13" in length would suit me. A 5" handle is most comfortable for me, so that made my request 14". A few others chimed in at that size, so that's what we're hoping to get.

but no way in h*ll I can buy.

But they are lovely, aren't they?

(as an aside, a 10" knife would not be used to chop and would not require a expanded hilt or butt-cap, would it?)

You know you need one.
I'll even be happy to sharpen it for you (every khukuri, but one, I've sharpened ended up scratched) so that it will be a "blem.":)

I can't make up my mind between the 10" and the 14" model. Nobody say "both.":p

Hmmm, kinda depends on the intended use of the knife. And the flare on the "new" model isn't that extreme. That said, I did have to reshape the handle of a JKM-1 because it just wasn't comfortable for me because the handle was too short. It's not too hard with a decent file and some sandpaper.

But look at this traditional Lapp knife with a 4.25 inch handle, and 3.5 inch blade. (there's a smaller version with the same design). As I understand it, the idea is that cold hands or mittens favor the use of draw cuts for safety, and piercing is done by applying the palm of the second hand to the large pommel. There is no guard to get in the way, and it's absence allows for the very secure deep sheath. Like learning another grip for using khuks with their unique handle, these folks have found something that works and developed it over some generations. Maybe another case where one should let the knife teach them. I hope to get one someday and find out.

Offhand, the "new" model looks to me like there's a lot more possibilties for grips than the Lapp knife.

That little 10" New Model looks like it's momma was a Bilton and it's daddy was a Chiruwa AK. Best of all it's got a crescent moon mark on it that I'm rather fond of.;)

Put me down for the 10.

About the same handle size as my 12 inch siru. That's enough for a knife I'm not going to chop with, so I think I'll take the 10. And, once we all have them, and start writing reviews, people will probably start begging for another order to go through, so I may have another shot at the 14 if this one's too small. :)
