Who wants gmail?

Danelle, what do you think of the system? My sister got me invited and I'm using it mostly for my personal email. When will it be for real, when will it have formatting and groups and all that stuff? Who knows?

I think the way Google handled this whole thing is hilarious. Announcing it on april fools, then doing the whole invite thing. Its fantastic. I love to see that a company has a sense of humor, as well as fearlessness when it comes to public opinion. Afraid of Google's robots reading your email? Use hotmail. I want a framed GOOGL stock certificate, even if they go bankrupt, just because they're so entertaining to watch right now.

Edit: and I think its cool that people offer invites to what amounts to complete strangers. Awesome people like those on this forum more than cancel out the rest of the noise for me.

skorgu, after you've been on BFC a while, you'll understand we aren't "complete strangers". :D

Maybe you guys can clue me in, why would anyone need gmail? Is that for those that wan't email but not through an ISP?

Since Yahoo has upgraded it's free e-mail in response to the advent of Gmail, I don't feel any compulsion to switch. Yahoo has excellent spam-blocking as well.

:footinmou Pardon, Esav, I realize that you all know each other virtually quite well. Sorry for any offence, I wasn't clear.

I simply meant that there's only a certain amount of 'knowledge' you can have about a person you've never been in the same room with.

Actually I've been lurking for a bit longer than my join date suggests, and I realize how strong a community this site has. I guess I've just gotten cynical about communities that exist solely online.

I'll throw in a couple of my invites too, if anyone wants one.

hypothetical (AT) gmail (DOT) com

First come, first serve. :)

I've already given out over 20 invites. I have two invites left right now. First come first serve. I've been using Gmail for a while now, and I absolutely love it.

and I absolutely love it

So, what about it specifically do you absolutely love?

What makes it better than other mail systems you've used?

Why would anyone want to use it over other systems?

Please, enlighten us.

I like the way that it links follow-up emails together so you can see them at the same time. It's very convenient to have them come up on one page.
I like the rapid search.
I like having keyboard shortcuts (haven't memorized them yet tho).
I've also got a couple of invites to hand out.

Well, I'm on several different computers during the course of the average day, so web-based email really makes sense for me. I can check my mail anywhere I can get to a computer with internet access. I like Gmail because it has 1GB of free storage. This is quite a boost compared to hotmail, which I've been using for years. Basically this means that you don't have to delete anything, and it's very easy to search through your saved emails with the built in search feature. I also like the fact that email conversations are displayed in a format similar to threads on a message board. Since I spend a lot of my online time on discussion boards, this is a format that makes sense to me. Finally, Gmail has a fairly uncluttered, spartan appearance. Maybe this is only for the beta version, but I like it. I hope they don't change the format too much when they switch over to their official release version.

First of all, to Danelle, THANKS!

I need to get a good volume of email going and see how I like it, but as soon as I get some invites I'll be on here offering 'em out. Does anyone know about how long until new invitees become new inviters?

I love the fact that the emails are arranged in conversations rather then how it is traditionally (by email), and the keyboard shortcuts are so handy. When switching between areas in Gmail (Inbox to Archive, Archive to Trash) it takes no time at all, nearly instant.

What makes it better than other mail systems you've used?

The space, the speed and the arrangement.

Why would anyone want to use it over other systems?

At this time they probably wouldn't, until Google makes it POP3 and they allow you to save drafts of emails it is almost like any other email service out there (apart for those things already mentioned). It is nice to have a chance to get some of the cool email addresses out there before others do.

skorgu, I wasn't offended at all :D As a matter of fact, a lot of us have met face to face. We meet at knife shows, at the Blade Show especially, we meet here in New Jersey at the NJ Knife Collectors Association every month, a dozen or more at a time.

Gmail. Right now, the formatting is pretty minimal. I got used to fonts and bolding and italicization. Not a big deal. I would like better handling of multiple addressees.

I had sent out about 20 emails and noticed they invited me to invite 6 others.

If you still have any left I'll try one out.
