Who wants gmail?

That wasn't too useful of me, eh? Actually, I at least had a search page that had the link on it that I was looking to use. ah well. too early in day for me, i guess. thanks for bumpin' me on da noggin'. :p

To say that google is an 'anti-knife' company purely based on the fact that they didn't want to advertise a weapon that is illegal in places, is like saying the pope is evil because he doesn't go to muslim masques and worship Allah...

Search for illegal drugs, you don't see any advertising for them, do you? I guess google is also an anti-illicit drug company.

Google's business is selling ads that appear with your search results. Look on the right side of the page.... Since Google currently has control of well over 90% of all net searches, and since most sales begin with a search, and since unless you can buy ads from Google your website will probably appear in most searches many pages past the point where customers stop looking ... when Google boycotts a web dealer it is quite difficult for that dealer to make enough sales to stay in business.

Google boycotts all web stores that sell guns and accessories, and they boycott many knife dealers. They look at your web store and they arbitrarily decide that one of the knives you sell meets their personal definition of a weapon, and whoopee -- you're screwed. It isn't just that they won't let you advertise that knife any more -- they won't let you advertise at all. They did that to Knife Outlet and they've done it to a number of other members. You can't take them to court; you can't even have a revolution -- they're not a government. Our only hope is their monopoly probably won't last forever -- but who knows how long it will last.

By the way, Google's definition of a "weapon" doesn't seem to match any laws anywhere. They make their own law, and it applies over the whole world.

Cougar and K. O., yes it is slightly unfair of them (I wasn't aware that they did it to knife dealers in general regardless of the products they sell (automatics or balisongs), but they do have a business and they can refuse to serve anyone they want, that is part of living in a America. Doesn't mean that it is right, but there is very little you can do about it. Boycotting Google is not the solution by any means, Google is involved in nearly everything on the web and will be very tough to stay away from. Good luck with it though.

P.S. I have 6 invites as well, if anyone wants one just drop me an email at Balisong.Addict@gmail.com

Not for me. Google is an anti knife company. I simply won't use any of their services.

(OK, I've read Cougar's explanation now. Fred, please send me e-mail.)

Let me try to put it into perspective. Google won't take advertising from companies sell "tactical" knives despite the fact that "tactical" knives aren't illegal anywhere. Even though butterfly knives are illegal in California, radar detectors are illegal in Michigan and they take advertising from sellers of radar detectors. It has nothing to do with legality or illegality. It has to do with a liberal agenda and a bias against knives. I could curl your hair with stories about Google, but this isn't the place to do it. I choose not to use their services. It doesn't hurt them a whit. It makes me feel better. What kind of email would you like, Johnniet?

The last time I checked on gmail it was not in operation yet. I then decided to let it go. From all the talk I guess its now in production. So I gather you have to be "invited" ? If thats the deal I would love to be invited as my actual ISP comcast does not give me enough room for email I want to save. Which is lame in itself beings I pay them over $50 a month. Anyway, let me know what I need to do, Meanwhile I will catch up on whats going on.

Thanks!

David

skorgu, I wasn't offended at all :D As a matter of fact, a lot of us have met face to face. We meet at knife shows, at the Blade Show especially, we meet here in New Jersey at the NJ Knife Collectors Association every month, a dozen or more at a time.
Yes, Esav is also buying me a plane ticket so I can fly over there and meet him and he is going to supply me with beer and drive me around to all the knife shows and ......

Yeah, OK, so that's not entirely correct, but it would be nice, wouldn't it? ;)

considering you have 1000mb of space i find it very convenient...my GF lives in Florida, so in order to communicate when we cant be on the phone Gmail makes it an easy and effective way to keep in touch and arrange when to call. Especially since I'm not flying back state side till May next year...

as for everything else, I get 1gb of space free...its TOO hard to resist, expecially since my 2mb on hotmail sucks dusty arabian donkeys!!!

I've been seeing the topic for weeks now. I guess it's time to try it. Anyone with an invitation left that they could extend to me?

So, what about it specifically do you absolutely love?

What makes it better than other mail systems you've used?

Why would anyone want to use it over other systems?

Please, enlighten us.

I'll give you one example of where it was a benefit for me. I was complaining on Chat that the email accounts that I had couldn't handle the MP3 file I needed to send out because of the size, (over 5MB). One of the guys turned me on to Gmail and there was no problem sending out the file.

I do a lot of graphics work and if I can send out a file via Gmail rather than burning it onto a CD and sending via UPS, then Gmail is worth having just for that.

My main email program will continue to be Outlook Express, just beacuse I'm used to it, but I also have email accounts with .Mac and Yahoo. Gmail is worth having also.
