Hi guys,

Schuyler, it would be a privilege to do this for you. My website and address are current. Discuss with Jason and Burt auction specifics and see if they can help.

Ken, thanks for the warm honest words to a UU. :)

Even though I have found that man-made religion is grossly overrated, I say good for you guys.

I also think a program like this would be great in Watts, Harlem or Chicago but sadly, no one would probably be interested in attending.

Thanks Coop. I'll address specifics through your web site and contact Burt regarding the best way to conduct the auction.

Gentlemen,
On behalf of the boys in my shop, I want to express my sincere appreciation for all your thoughts, prayers, gifts, ideas etc. I have seen first hand how much it means to a young person for someone to pour into his or her life. This vocational school is set to do just that. I would never have guessed 10 years ago that I would be using my blacksmith skills on the mission field but here I am! Honestly I couldn't do it without the support of folks like you. My wife and I rely 100% on the giving of other people. My school has been blessed to receive such wonderful blacksmiths as Robb Martin of Ontario and Jason Knight. I hope in the future more will be able to come and share their skills.
There have been some questions raised about faith. I do work for a faith-based organization and my hope is that all will come to know Christ. With this in mind we are open to any person who is willing to learn, regardless of faith. It is our hope that we will demonstrate the great love that was first demonstrated to us.
A couple people have offered to make knives to auction in order to help us advance the school. I can't tell you how it warms my heart to think of someone pouring time and sweat into making a work of art to benefit us. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

With great appreciation,
Mike Deibert

I have been thinking the same thing. I really think that inner-city youth would benefit from a blacksmithing program. Maybe I'll be sent to do just that one day.

Let's teach former death squad members how to make sharp, pointy instruments....what a great skill!!!:grumpy:

How about focusing a little closer to home, you great members of faith and action?

Not for me.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I think it is a fantastic idea Schuyler...just misplaced in it's execution...so no, sadly.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

This is my charity of choice, am a Life Member, and encourage the rest of you to join as well...

There are simply too many abused children in the United States for me to be thinking about those OUTSIDE of the United States.

Gee STeven, here is a novel idea........ Why not let these guys focus where they wish and you do the same.
Just a thought of course. ;)

In fact, depending on how one read it; your comment referring to some as .... "great members of faith and action"..... could be construed as a very feeble sarcastic attempt on your part to belittle them and their project.

That is certainly how it came across to me.

Seems it would be a real shame if that is how you really meant it............ to me anyway.........

Best wishes...................

Well, not to outdone by a heathen :D, I will donate a knife to be auctioned with the proceeds going to the project. I seldom have knives that aren't spoken for, but just happen to have just completed a boot knife that was laying around while I was waiting for my last batch of blades to come back from Paul Bos.

Perhaps Coop can take a simple picture of it to post for the auction? since he made the challenge in the previous post. Let me know Coop and I will send it to you. Otherwise I guess I can take an amaturish shot and post it, but there's no doubt who's shot would have more potential!

Michael Starr, you're right about actions defining our faith. This sounds like a project worthy of support and I enjoy hearing what other knifemakers are involved in.

I hope adequate funds come in to take care of the project needs and then some.

Thaks for bringing this to our attention Burt.

Schuyler Lovestrand

Hey Schuyler,
Thank you so much for this offer of a knife for auction. I was checking out your knives on line. You do some amazing work. It means the world to me and boys that you are willing to do this for us. I hope we can do something for you one day!

Look, Burt feels that he was called by G_d to do this thing, so he is doing it....I feel compelled to call it goofy, and misguided....Burt and I talk, we know where the other is coming from.....mutual respect, and an attempt to understand the other is not always successful.

You may not realize this, the level that Burt and I communicate at, and how....I named my biggest cat after Burt, fwiw.

Appreciate your input...I am not belittling the effort, but maintain that it is misguided, if that makes any sense to you....and since this post was made where I live in cyberspace, I'll keep on truckin', thank you very much.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I like Steven Garsson. I hope he continues to speak his mind here and anywhere. I will stand in front of him if anyone wants to throw stones. Dont be misguided in your judgement of what Steven says.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God": Matthew 5:9.

Jason thanks for being a great example of what Christianity is intended to be. There is a reason that I see you and Burt as good men and not merely skilled craftsmen. God Bless.

Thank you my friend, you continue to inspire!

I truly hope that you accomplish what you set out to do.

it's so good to pay it forward, no matter where it's going. We're all here together on this planet!
Anything which helps youth become productive adults is all good in my book.
I personally don't feel inclined to sponsor this particular project, but this thread and the kind heartedness it's produced has inspired me to think of ways to contribute more toward the good of mankind:thumbup:

Excellent !!!

And yes it makes perfect sense STeven... it is your opinion..... no more no less.

I personally think your original comments were not called for and added no value to the thread..... but, that is only my opinion.

If it works for Burt and those involved in the project, no objection from me........ ;)

Thanks for the heads up on that.

And as far as "throwing stones" J.KNIGHT, none were tossed from me. ;)
I just questioned and was wondering about the value of SG's posts as it related to the objective of the thread.

Schuyler Lovestrand generously offered to make a knife and to donate all the proceeds to the Nicaragua Power Hammer project. Even the smallest thing will help make this happen, but to really go all-out is quite another! Take a look....

Knife Description from Schuyler:
Style: Boot knife
Steel: ATS-34 Stainless blade, tapered tang
Fittings: Stainless filed liners
Handle: Fossil Mammoth bone handle

From Burt... One thing I dig about this knife is the tang that is delicately proud of the handle and liners. This is certainly harder to do, but it adds an elegant touch.

Ok, so here's the deal. The above knife from Schuyler is being auctioned to raise money for the power hammer project. Here's what we'll do. Post your bids here on the thread. Post your bid, and other forumites can raise your bid. You can raise your bid as many times as you like. Bidding will close on Sunday, August 16th, at 8:00 p.m. Pacific time in the U.S. The time stamp on your post will be the official time (fyi: the time stamps on Bladeforums are U.S. Pacific time). Let's make the bids in at least $25 increments.

The winner can make out a check or money order to "Missionary Ventures International" and mail it to Schuyler. He will send you the knife and send the check on to MVI in care of the project.

Thanks in advance for bidding and for your generosity! Now, who wants to have this knife....?

Oh my, Schuyler, so much erotica in a knife dedicated to the Lord. Seems almost sacrilegious if a pagan were to win . . . oh, I get it . . . now that's cunning, brother!

Sensational and novel piece! Dang, I wish the Stimulus Plan was working better for me. Hope the word gets out, because someone out there will bid a bundle on this one.

Too bad STeven has demurred; I've never seen a knife more befitting one of his boots or persona.

This is my first post as I just like the reading. I like the idea of the people helping the people as they have chosen and not being forced upon one. I would like to place a bid for the LOVESTRAND boot knife and worthy cause of $300.00

STeven Garsson, your remark about arming former death squad members shows complete ignorance of the politics and people of Nicaragua.
my eldest daughter has recently returned from 4 years in Managua where she managed a small Canadian "aid agency". not associated with any religious group, no preaching, just helping incredibly poor people who have suffered terribly for many years. i visited her there and met many Nicaraguans, all very gracious, kind loving people, whose spirit is still positive despite many having lost family members to disease, malnutrition, torture and murder.
many owned nothing and lived on a huge dump site scavenging bits of discarded garbage to construct a hovel for shelter, yet they still insisted on sharing whatever scraps of food they had with us, their humble dignity ever present.
none wanted handouts, but help to turn their ingenuity and industriousness into becoming self sufficient.
the project Burt is supporting here is EXACTLY the kind of aid that really does help people begin to transform their lives out of poverty.
i'm in and will make a donation today.
STeven perhaps you do not know that the "death squads" you despise were American trained and funded. that is fact.
