Who was/is in scouts?

Another Eagle scout here, my troop was great - lots of camping, hiking, climbing, etc. What was odd was having friends at high school (graduated in 2001) talk about their troops and how they never do anything fun.

He is talking about going to Philmont at some point. Who has done that and can comment on the pros and cons?
I think it's a great opportunity, especially for less experienced or younger backpackers. Each crew backpacks for 12 days, following a set itinerary. Each night they'll stay at a different backcountry camp; some are "trail camps" while others are "staff camps" with activity programs and basic facilities.

The cons, it's rather expensive and it's a long way from being a true 'wilderness' experience.

i have a lot of friends that did philmont and while i was never interested in it (i was more for national jamboree which i slipped in 2 times for and NOAC which ive gone to 3 and am planing to hit my final youth one next year) i would suggest it to many people.

o and for the fixed blade thing a little amusing fact, national does not say you cannot carry fixed blades, but they are discouraged if they are large, some troops took that to an extreme but near the end of my time in scouts i carried a small fixed blade and no one said much especially after i said how the rules were really worded (it probably helped that i didnt get caught doing stupid stuff ever and i was well respected by the youth as well as the adults)

I did several years in scouts but never made eagle scout. I too got more interested in girls over knots and stars:D Great times, great experiences, and wouldn't trade that time for anything.

Were your scouting years in Connecticut? Did you ever go to Camp Sequassen? Did you keep the Hermit's Grave green?

Eagle Scout here class of '87, and ordeal member OA.
Involved again after a long hiatus. My oldest has just crossed over into boy scouts after earning his Arrow of Light. The middle one has earned his Bear and the youngest is going to be a Tiger this fall. I am keeping kinda busy.:D

not even close to eagle but somewhat proud of first class, and quartermaster. Had a great time in scouting. didn't get to go to philmont but i sure did want to so i could wear the buckle. almost as cool as the FFA jackets.

Eagle Scout, Vigil in the OA Currently and assistant Scoutmaster, Associate Crew Advisor, and an associate Advisor in the OA
I actually just got back from a meeting

I went clear through Cub Scouts to Life Scout as a Boy Scout. I'd have made Eagle Scout, but I discovered girls, and that didn't leave me any time to continue with Scouting.:D.

+1 on the girls including chasing on the night I was tapped out for OA

Made it to Life and Vigil in OA, and then girls, fast cars, and football took priority. (In that order)

I am a star scout now and should be life by summercamp. My troop is also going to philmont this summer :). As for the whole discovering girls thing I'm also in a venture crew, it is a spinoff of scouts but with girls :) we need more girls in the crew though :( they are all taken:(.

at least you get to go camping with girls, i can count on one hand the times i got to go camping with girls and that was because they came to a big even with our troop (and most of them were much older than me or ummm not attractive)
